Club Match Participation or Not

On Match Club days at your local range, do all shooters that show up shoot the match or does your club let shooters decide themselves if they want to shoot the match or just do their own thing while others are shooting the match.

our club produces a calendar that lists the times and range that each match is being held. we shut the whole range down for each match.

soooo.....my match is on Range C on the 4th Sat from 8:00 - 12:00..... so if you show up at range C during those times, your only option is to shoot with us (by our rules and time restraints) or wait till the match is over and the range is free.

Most of our members know to check the calendar before coming out, as something may have changed, and the range you wanted to shoot at is reserved.

At the ranges that I shoot matches at, Reade range, Williamsport, Mifflin county sportsman's, Ridgeway rifle club, they close the specific range were shooting a match at. Several of the locations have more than one range, and those are left open for members to shoot at(unless theres also a match at one of them). But during the match, the specific range were using is closed to any other than match participants.

If that particular match charges for participation and pays the club a part of those match fees, then definitely only paid match shooters should use the range.
Even if the match does not pay the club for this range time, common sense and safety says that just the match should have priority on the range. Imagine the unsafe and confusing cluster that would occur when targets need changed between each relay.
This is probably all moot because most ranges post the calendar for matches, and state that the range is open to only match participants.

A club's layout and staffing, if any, and ability to communicate will largely influence a ranges SOP.

where I used to shoot a 200 yd prone match, if anyone showed up wanting to shoot 200 yds they could shoot off a bench or prone, but had to follow the match director's range commands. The adjacent 100 yd line was open for anyone to use but they, too, had to follow range commands for the match.

We have a short range side (250 yards and pistol range) and a long range for 600 and 1k matches. During a match the 600-1000 is only for the match but the 250 side remains open. However the match director has complete control of both sides for making the range hot or cold whenever is required by the match.

Our NRA Style Range , Palma ,F-Class etc.
200 to 1000 yards . Is only open for Matches..
People my stand behind the firing point and watch quietly...

At a recent ABRA match, a world class champion had to follow our match directors directions about when the range was hot or cold, that's life. Matches take precedent over individuals IMO.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Suck it up buttercup.

I've seen both approaches at different ranges. At some venues, the overall number of competitors for the Club Match was sufficient that it simply wasn't feasible to allow others to shoot on their own during the match. At others, non-competitors were allowed to shoot at the other end of the firing line, but they had to conform the firing schedule of the competitors during the match. My impression was that some didn't like that, but at least they were able to shoot while the match was in progress.

Our Club has 3 different ranges all separated by berms, and one located in another part of the property. Matches on the main range do not allow other than participants in the match to shoot but the other ranges are available. Every member has a match calendar mailed to them and one is on the website as well.
