Clicky bolt lift

Old brass in new chamber.
30-284 I just had chambered is either stiff to close bolt or won't close at all, I'm seeing a rub mark on the area just ahead of the web area, but I'm measuring .4998-.500 on mic. If I sand down case it fits without issue till I shoot brass then it's clicky on bolt lift. Is brass shot?
Anyone got a measurement in that area on new brass?

Re: Click bolt lift

I wouldn't sand down cases, esp there, that is where you get case head separations.

Sounds like the load may be hot, or the new chamber is tighter and you need a small base die.

Re: Click bolt lift

Find a die that will resize the base. Make it if you have to.

I found my 45acp die would resize the base of my dasher brass.

Re: Click bolt lift

Were both chambers cut with the same reamer? If not, buy new brass and save yourself the headache.

Re: Click bolt lift

The case print from the Berger book says .500 in web area. I'm under that. If wasnt so redicouls jumping hoops to post pics here Id post screen shots.

Measurements a measurement unless im missing something.

I know what you're saying. I went down this road with dasher brass last summer. Chambers cut with different reamers though. Brass measured the same but was very clicky. Ended up using another die that squeezed the base down another .0005". Shot great, bolt lift great but I had to do it every time I loaded it. But, like I said, mine was two different reamers.

Chamber is not the same no matter if its the same reamer

True. But so far I've had 0 problems swapping brass between barrels when cut with the same reamer. Lucky?

Not sure who your guy is cutting your chambers is but if he isn't cutting em to print what is he cutting?

Chambering technique can cause variation in chamber size at the back, even when the same reamer is used. You have a chamber, and you have some brass that does not fit it. The numbers or what is logical, should be, etc. is irrelevant. Generally, brass that has been fired several times in a chamber that is larger than the one that you are trying to make it work in will be a problem because the brass wants to go back to its presized dimension. Firing several times has work hardened it. so that it will actually take a smaller die to hit your dimension than if you started with new brass. There is one thing that you can do. If the number and condition of the cases warrant it. You have have your chamber polished out so that the brass fits.

I do agree Boyd that a chamber polish to open up the rear is the awnser to use the brass, as the primer pockets are tight yet.

A gun smith would flip . Most any pride their self to have their chamber to have run out of .005or less. Now your going telling them to open it up. Good luck in your next Chamber job . ;D Larry
