Cleaning your cleaning rod brushes

Geez guys! Bruno charges $10.95 for a dozen brushes. One brush will last a weekend match. I throw it away after the weekend. A stinking 91 cent brush for a weekend is nothing compared to what you guys spend for other things.

Are those brass wound wire core or steel? Can't find any tech. data on them with Bruno.
I use Dewey but, if Bruno's are accurately wound (some brushes are pretty sloppy in the bore) and brass core I might be interested.

Yep.....nobody pinches pennies like a PA dutchman ( aside from a scottsman ::)) but even I view them about as expendadable as patches. Sometimes we spend a dollar to save a nickel.

+1

Keep a bottle of water in the back of the truck. Pour some on the brush after use. It cleans right up, bronze or plastic.

Cut rate aerosol carburetor cleaner...one shot will quickly blast off the carbon crud and residual solvent. Dries in seconds and the brushes will last ten times longer.

To answer Syncrowaves question....yes. Today's ammonia based solvents will start to eat up the bristles of the brush during non use, 99 cents or not. ;)

Bobm,
That is why I throw them away after a weekend match and that is .91 cents. If I worried about .91 cents every match against what I would spend for fuel, reloading supplies, food, drink, match fees, cleaning supplies, and a multitude of other real expenses.
Simple question, how much does a barrel cost installed? If you are very very lucky it will last maybe , I said maybe it will last 6 matches or 6 weekends. Just figure how many rounds you shoot wasting barrel life breaking in a barrel, practice, load development, and matches. I think 1400 rounds is max with top accuracy. That is about $100 a match weekend in barrel wear if you have yours chambered by somebody and about $50 if you do it yourself.
You worry about a .91 cent brush?

At the range a squirt of brake cleaner, if I'm home I add compressed air. I clean my cleaning rob with paper towels in between brushings and at the end.

It's funny i just bought my second dozen brushes since 1996. I spray them with non chlorinated brake cleaner after use and they seem to last for ever. sure a lot less money than a box of bullets. Sounds like we are tripping over 20 dollar bills to pick up a dime…….. to worry about a few brushes……jim

I do not disagree with you, Butch. I shoot HP silhouette and can get 5500 accurate shots from my SS 7-08 match barrels. This game is fired offhand. I have several rifles for this game. I buy brushes by the dozen, too. When they get too small to do any good, time for a new one. The guy that cleans infrequently with say a solvent like Montana Extreme and puts the brush away wet will have a green mess next time.
