Cleaning the bore at matches

If I use WS-2 (Danzac) only at end of match with the barrel still warm, if naked bullets then every other match (i.e. end of 2nd, end 4th match, and at end of match. YMMV...see what works best for your bbl.

I shot beside C Mackie last year as he shot a new aggregate record at 600. He was cleaning thoroughly each relay and was asked how often he cleans, his response was (when my barrels dirty). His 8 target average was under 2"

I just looked it up. 1.816 aggregate. World record!!
I heard that it was revised even lower by official scoring people.

I was just curious. I am new to benchrest shooting. I didn't want to clean when I didn't have too. Not that I mind cleaning. I guess when accuracy starts going downhill it's time to clean?

I don't shoot BR, but it seems like waiting until accuracy drops is too late.

I have studied this closely in a variety of ways and found that after 30 shots you are on the decline.

I thought Chad Jenkins shot a 1.5 or something close to that last year at Piedmont for new record, 600 yards IBS Four target Agg.

If you are talking about actual competition, then no, its too late when you see accuracy going. You will have already given away too much in the standings by the time you see the problem. In matches where the winner comes down to X count (score), or ten thousands of an inch (group), you need to be proactively getting the best from your rifle.

Like everything else in shooting I believe each barrel can be different. I have ran well over 100 rounds through one of my 30br's with no noticeable affect on accuracy and yet I have a another 30 that will fall off in accuracy with less than half that many rounds. Unlike some that claim to not mind or even enjoy cleaning I do not like cleaning. I would rather be shooting than cleaning. So I try to find out how many rounds I can fire before I start to loose something and then make sure I never come close to that number during a round. That may be 40 rounds with one barrel or 100 with another. I may even do a light cleaning at certain times if I feel that is all that is needed at the time.
