Cleaning rod shipping

I've shipped quite a few HS baseball bats. The packages wind up being about 36" and weigh about 2.5lbs. I ship USPS Priority from GA and it is less than $20 cross-country.

I just typed in a 6lb 4"x54" round tube via usps priority mail. To Pharr, Tx it was $15.70. To Bellingham, Wa it was $29.70ish...I forgot the change. Lol!
Of course that option leaves you looking for a box/tube like that. Boxes are ridiculous. I use a lot of priority mail services. Their regional rate boxes are usually the way to go, to most places and the boxes are free.

I do the Brownells $49 anything ships free, helps a lot when you need just a sizing bushing or something small, I save more than I spend (LOL on the $49).

MTM makes a super nice polymer case. In the old days (muzzleloading rifles) I used to buy hickory ramrod/cleaning rods by the six pack. They used to just lay them on a 1x4 and wrap them with saran wrap and an outer wrap of shipping tape.

I'm willing to bet that they have the shipping weight on those rods set higher than it actually is, because when shipping a single you can take a hit on the cost of shipping. UPS has an extra handling fee for anything 48" and greater, of $14.25. I ship around $12-$15K a week with UPS, I know the system inside and out.

Also, a little bit of helpful info, if you ship in a round tube under 48" they can deny damage claims because it is not a standard box and extra handling fees apply. Anything with an extra handling fee is also not guaranteed by insurance claims.

Call them directly, ask if you can pay actual shipping rates on the weighed package, rather than the calculated weight they have entered for the multiple items you want to buy.
