Cleaning Rod Length

I will be installing a new 30" barrel on my Remington action and using a Lucas guide. My existing cleaning rod will be too short. Can someone with this set up tell me how long a rod to buy? Thanks. Frank

I use the same bore guides. I tend to like 'em long, such that the handle doesn't need to pass over the stock. Measure from the muzzle to the end of the butt stock. The rod should be at least that long, not including the handle or the jag.

I have an Ivy 50", .203" diameter with 8-32 female thread that I don't use anymore. PM me if you are interested.

I went through them all at a lot of $$$. Found the long ones just a PIA. Ended up with a pro shot with small
handle that will not hit the stock.

Frank another thing to consider is rod cal. size, I've always used a 22 Cal. rod so I can use 2 1/2" round patches on my 30 cal. rifle, they cover the Jag. I can get away with a 44" rod on my H.G. with a 32" barrel but it has a flat top on the stock. the stock will make a difference.

There is absolutely nothing easy for me anymore at age 70. I have a high comb stock. I have been using a cheap nylon bore guide that I had to shorten to keep it off the comb. With a 30" barrel installed a 50" rod would be even with the butt and crown. Nothing sticking out. I have been using a PRO-SHOT stainless but most here don't like them. I thought with this barrel I would go first class with a Lucas and new rod. The handle on the PRO-SHOT is only 5/8" diameter and with just a little effort I could keep it off the stock. Not sure what the h to do now. Later! Frank

I still have the 28" barrel on. Overall length is exactly 48". I guess with a long jag and brush a 50" would work with the new 30" on. Later! Frank

PS:How much of the Lucas guide sticks out of a SA Remington 700 in 6 BRX ?

do you use the little jacket thing for the stock (sinclair has them), stops solvents and rod knocks etc. You still need the correct length rod....I use a 50" with my PR&T FTR lowboy stock and a 30" finished barrel...rod is easy long enough.

third time is a charm im hoping I have A dasher with Krieger Barell and a brake. my original carbon fiber one is to short. Bought the longest one i could find in a cabelas... 36"... still to short by a ways.... with bore guide installed i need at least something in the 43+ range...

The issue of the rod contacting the stock is an important consideration. I like to use the shortest rod (to minimize flex) that will push the jag / brush out of the barrel so I've filed down the handles on my Dewey rods so the rod will clear the high comb in some of my varmint rifles.

Talked with Mike Lucas via e-mail today. He is going to make me a shorten version of his guide to keep it off the comb. I ordered a 50" Bore Stix in order to get a straight shot into the guide. Thanks for all the input guys. Later! Frank
