Cleaning Patches - Need Advice

For many years I've used Hoppe's cleaning patches for my rifles and they've worked very well. They didn't fray into threads and fit perfectly. However recently I had several bags of them that are severely unsized making them useless. I noticed that they are now made in China so I'm not suprised.

Can you recommend a source for high quality cleaning patches, (ones that don't fray into threads and are properly sized for a dewey jag)

I've tried Sinclair, Tipton, and Dewey. They all come apart into threads when you apply any force to them.

Has anyone tried the BoreTech brand. Their website claims that they are perfectly sized and don't fray.

I'll probably get called out for saying this, but all I normally use for cleaning patches are BOUNTY paper towels ripped to the size I need them, I've been using them for years.
They sure seem tough enough for the job, I've tried others, but BOUNTY is the one I use....

yep, cut your own from the old t-shirt, tidy whities, and for my shotguns i've even been known to use old socks. Lately though, i've been using felt bought at the local Ben Franklin on an undersized jag. Works great and IF they fray, you better go see your gun plumber cause you got some SERIOUS problems.

Southern bloomers brand. They are fairly easy to find. You can get bags of 100 -1000 and up.

Pro-shot patches are the best quality I have seen. I buy them direct @proshotproducts.com. Sinclair's have been good for me in the past....I find it odd that these frayed in normal use....perhaps you should use a smaller caliber jag.......also bad things happen with patches that are too tight. Patch thickness seems to wonder all over the place various brands......change your jag size to accommodate this problem.

Whatevers on sale at local gun shop. Never tried the paper towel but might have to look into trying that.

I have used Pro Shot for years, but have recently switched to Bore Tech patches, both do the job for me, but seems like the Pro Shot are a tad softer and will lose some threads once in a while. The Bore Tech Patches just seem to be beefier. YMMV

I used to use my tighty whiteys but the skidmarks would combine with montana extreme 50 bmg and would create a streaking down the barrel ( I guess its good for copper and not mud). ;D Just playing. I use southern bloomers and proshot whichevers at the local gunstore for that caliber and the bloomers seem to be a little thicker maybe tougher but I would try some different jags too

K22 , I've used Proshot for many years and like them . I do use Military patches sometimes when Pdog hunting to get the first pass goo out of the barrel after prolonged shooting as they seem "rougher/ tougher " , then switch to Proshot for the following passes . You have to match the size and shape of any Patches you choose to the type/style of Bore Jag . They are very different to how they grip the Patch and the OD you end up with to push down the Bore . Just some Trial and error will work . Oh BTW , I miked some 17 and 20 cal Jags ( can't remember the Brands ) some time ago and they were the same size ( 17 Size ) ! Based on a previous Post , I will pick up some Bore Tech Patches when I find some .

I've been using Sinclair patches for quite a while now and never experienced them coming apart in threads. Usually I just push them through, but never had a problem stroking them either.

Wife wears out her pyjamas faster than I can cut patches from them. My gun really likes these patches. ;)
If you weren't cleaning your gun so often, maybe she wouldn't be wearing pyjamas! haha, just kidding ;)
Old t-shirts have always worked great for me.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to order some BoreTech patches and try them. I'll let you know how they work.

The advice I liked the best was using the wife's pyjamas - that could get real interesting.

Same here.

Been using the ones that Montana Extreme makes, only because they are a local Sportsman's warehouse, they work great and are cut caliber specific and they are cheap.
