Cleaning patch sizes?

I just get a yard of cotton flannel and cut to size. It works pretty well. As Butch pointed out, stabbing them off center lets you use a larger patch.

What size square cleaning patches do you use for 30cal as well as .22rf?

Also anyone here buy material and make your own ? If so is the a specific weight material or will any 100% cotton flannel brushed both sides work.

Thanks
I buy 12 gauge patches only and cut them as needed. what size for each caliber? -- the one that fits.

Lots of great suggestions listed here, I follow most of them. Only thing I can add:
- some of the cleaning solvents will not "wick" into the fabric and will just sit on top, so that is always something I check
- you can adjust tightness to some degree depending on if you stab the patch in the center (tighter in the bore) or somewhat off center (looser). I use the same jags Dusty mentioned.

I have found the synthetic material patches that became popular several years ago to be worthless.

My wife is a quilter and sometimes makes T-shirt quilts. She always has a lot of throw away remnants. She can take her rotary cutter and whip out a few hundred patches in no time. I've been using these for years.

Everything from .22 to 12 gauge.
Hey parson, Good job on the recycle.Hug your wife for helping. And welcome to the site. Jeff

Just a practical thought from me. I have been using Triangle Patches for 3 or so years with both ease of use, running them through the barrel to what I believe is a superior cleaning patch VS the square patches:

I have also heard that people go to their local parts/hardware store and buy a couple of the gasket cutter/punches in various size and then just pound/hammer out patches from old cotton cloth on a wooden board.

There was a book (spiral bound) that Fred Sinclair wrote. It had a reference page for patch and jag sizes. It was very accurate.
22RF- 22 jag with 1 3/8" Pro-shot patch
30 Cal-270 jag with1 3/4" Pro-shot patch

It depends on the length of your jag. I have a short one on my 22 it's a 187 size rod I think .17cal. I have to pull off some threads on 1 1/2 round proshot patches.
The 6br I think 6br 7mm patches work fine. I think 1 3/4 " square.

I use 1-3/8" on my 6BR.

1-3/4" or 2" for 308, though the 2" is pretty tight on the new (PacNor) barrel.

I use either the Brownells branded patches or Pro Shot, depending on what was available when I bought them.

I use the Pro-Shot patches, and their version of the Parker-Hale wrap-around style jag, which increases the cleaning area of the jag/patch ten-fold.

for .22LR, I use the 6-7mm square patches. For .260 I use the 1 3/8" square (marked for .30 cal on the bag), and for .308 I use the 1 3/4" square (marked for .338 - .38 cal).

FWIW, Pro-Shot patches have a rough side, and a smooth side on each patch. When using the Parker-Hale style jag, the rough side goes on the inside, the smooth side faces out.

Am I the only one who uses smaller jags and patches to clean my barrels? it takes a bit longer but it is much easier for me. I always get where I want to be clean wise. I use correct size brushes. And I do comment on old posts/threads.

I cut mine square. Size, that depends on the thickness of the flannel.
I get odd looks from pretty girls when I go into a fabric store. Even more so when I whip out a mic or a caliper and start checking thickness of fabric.
If you did that while my wife was in the store she would probably take you home to replace me.

pro shot patches in every size, pierce style jag in a caliber down. adjust the stab location to get the tightness you want according to what youre doing. for a 30 cal I use a 2" round on a 270 jag. for 22rf I use a 7/8" square on a .187 jag.
What combination have you found works best for 6mm barrels? And for 7mm barrels? I also only use the pro shot patches.

I have used a 1 3/4” sq pro shot patch on a 22 jag forever on a 6mm. If the barrel is real dirty you gotta stab a bit off center until you get the first pass down then you can get closer to the center. I even use this combo with abrasives. For a 7mm i use that same patch and a 6.5mm jag. If you use cheaper patches like the butch’s, sinclair, etc they are a bit looser so you may have to go up in jag size and stab a bit off center to get the right fit.

I use diaper material from Walmart. Use a fabric cutter and make them to fit. 1" for 22 rimfire. 1 1/2" for 6 br and 1 3/4" for 6.5 cal. Use jags to fit. Toms.

1 3/8 Proshot patch on both .22 Parker Hale and 6mm jag. Makes things easy.

Get a Parker Hale style jag in 7mm and 6mm. 1 3/8 Proshot patches with both, and any other caliber with the correct caliber Parker Hale.
