cleaning patch size?

What size patches are you using in your 30cal barrels (308 and 30br in my case)?

Im using a Dewey 30cal rod and jag if it makes any difference .

Also any of you make your own ? If so what material do you use?

Thanks

With the rods and jags that I am using I use a 1 inch round patch for 22 caliber one and a half inch round for anything from 6.5 to 30 caliber and 2 inch round for my 338 caliber rifles . Pro shot is the brand

I cut my own out of bulk cotton flannel bought at Wal Mart. You'll learn to cut them just right and you can spear them a little off center if you want to use a lil bigger one. I bought a 1000 brand name patches that were highly recommended on this forum a couple of years ago and the solvent would bead up and run off them. They had some sort of finish on them. Be advised that I am not an expert:)

Cut old white underwear into strips and roll on to jag. 60% cotton/40 % polyester. For a tighter fit in the bore, over lap more. I use the same method and jag for 223 and 243.

I buy 2" & 1.5's.
I'm staying to use 2" on both 30br & 6mm.
Really depends on the jag. A longer stem jag allows bigger patch.

It’s not simple question and answer, Jim. It depends on the patches and the jag. I’m using Pro-Shot 1 3/4 square patches For my .30BR. I’m using David Wick jags. David passed a number of years ago and now I believe Steve Theye at Bench-Rite is making and selling jags that mimic David’s. The Wick jags have a generous recess behind the forward surfaces that hold a lot of the patch and a lot of cleaning solution. I see another has posted a similar note while I was typing.

I just started using 2 1/4 square in my 30BR, Bore Tech 30cal jag, older ones from Sinclair at least ten yrs. old.

I use what fits best for the job. In other words, trial & error. I like a loose patch for mopping a cleaner in to soak (like Hoppe's or Butch's). I use a very tight patch for JB cleaning & polishing. I keep a pair of scissors in my cleaning kit & depending on the rod & the barrel I can pretty much tell what is the right patch to cut for the job at hand. Works for me!

My wife uses her rotary cutter to cut old t-shirts into patches for me. She can cut up a hundred in no time. Whatever size I need. I also keep scissors on my bench to trim if needed.

I have never been able to find where x size patch works with any bore diameter. There are too many variables (exact bore diameter, patch thickness, jag or loop, diameter of the jag or loop, etc.). Since the late 70s when I started, it was always "grab a patch that looks proper based on the package size recommendations". From there, it may work perfectly, or not. Often, or most times, I get the closest working size and try it out, then it may work out. If it is too loose, try a bigger one, and if that is too tight, trim it a bit bigger than the loose one. Sorry that I can't answer your question and give you an exact size, but this is what you have to work with.

2” round made by Pro Shot...who I’ve found makes excellent patches. Jag is usually a Bore Tech in appropriate size. Sometimes use a Parker Hale jag with patch cut to fit.
