Cleaning in the prairie dog towns

How often do ya'll clean varmint rifles in the field ?

Have been cleaning my varmint rifles during breaks in prairie dog shooting using Wipe Out. Haven't been keeping count, but it is about every hour or so.

My shooting partner says that we need to cut back. Says the solvent effects the meat.

Carbon kills the good barrels..I try to do a wipe out about every fifty shots or less on the high intensity cartridges & in my nice 6mmbr rifle...In the field it is tough to stop & clean having a second or third rifle helps..If you use those plastic boxes 50 in each that is one way to keep track...Or two paper 20 packs..just about the same...It would be nice if the counting works out even near the end of the day...P-Dog shooting is different from eastern groundhogs..busy day for me is twenty shots...Wish I had that problem...mike in ct

Carry at least two guns with you. I clean mine when they stop hitting to dogs. Use M Pro 7 then Wipeout. Switch to the other gun and shoot while the Wipeout is working.

Wipeout will NOT ruin the taste of ground squirrel meat...

Hmmmm,thats news to me,Ive never heard any of the coyotes complain.

Wow, I only clean at the end of the day. I hope I am not doing any damage by not cleaning more often.

Being a poor shot, I can't tell when accuracy drops. So far I have simply attributed any misses to my ineptitude.

How can you tell when accuracy drops off because of the gun? Especially when you are in the field.

What are you shooting...a 223? I shoot a 22-250,.243 and a .223. I try not to get the pipe hot enough to brand cattle, but heck sometimes you can't help it. My guns usually will go 80 rounds,with the exception of my 22-250'S) before the start shooting like crap. Then I clean.

MPro7 isn't the strongest stuff around, but for getting most of the black stuff out it seems to work fine--plus it's non-toxic. WipeOut works faster with the Accelerator. One nice thing about Wipe-out--no ammonia.

I like the two-gun idea,or two barrels for that matter), but for those who can't afford it, you can also bring a little target stand or gong to check your accuracy after 30 rounds or so. Each barrel is different. Factory tubes normally need to be cleaned more often. The caliber makes a difference too. Consider a 20 Vartarg shooting 18.5gr of powder vs. a 6-284--both popular varmint cartridges.

I clean after every 50 rounds. Every 25 with my Swift AI. I use Wipeout at the end of the day and Butches and CR10 for a normal cleaning.

I am shooting a straight 6mmBR. The load I use is light. I get 3200 fps with a 70 grain Nosler BT. The cases come out of the chamber luke warm. You can barely even tell it was fired.

So far the longest between cleaning has been around 200 shots. Most of the time there are a few minutes between shots. When I went to Wyoming last year is was late July and there weren't as many dogs out, or so I am told. I will be going again in about 3 weeks or so. If I shoot my 2000 rounds and burn my barrels up I will be happy.

Right now the plan is to clean only at the end of the day. Hopefully this will be enough.

i am zeldabluum. i am new. i shoot pds. i have to fly to shoot.
i take 1 gun. us win m70 223 hv. cant take solvents or oil. its
the law. so i buy what i find. i clean every 40-50 rds. check
the gun out. cause i have no spares. shoots are mostly weekend
2-3days. MY GUN's accuracy starts to open after app 50 rds.
dont know about guns history.bought it used off the net. i have
put app 3000 rd thr it.
