cleaning at a match

Better to give a barrel a light clean job after every round or a through cleaning about half way ? What I have seen is in the first 20 or so rounds the accuracy and spreads will be good and as you foul the barrel more on some guns the speeds will increase and move you out of a node. The fear of the first being out of group after a barrel is cleaned because some matches I shoot in you have no extra rounds for foulers. Most of the matches are 50 to 60 rounds. DG

I have had the same question and would like to know what most of the others do. I never see anyone cleaning their bbl. between strings at any F-Class matches. I have seen benchrest shooters cleaning during matches though. We might get more replies if this was posted in the competition forum. It just rips at my soul to go over 60 or 80 rds. without cleaning.

I clean after each time I take the gun out too shoot. If I shoot 10 rounds to practice or 80 rounds at a match. If I have a gun that fouls and can't make it threw a match without loosing accuracy I work with it til it does or rebarrel it.

My problem is not copper but will load up with carbon and my speeds will increase to the point that the gun will be out of tune. DG

Can't say I have ran into that problem, I always test my load through the chrono after it's fouled until I am sure I can clear a match without cleaning with out it going out of the SD or changing the extreme spread.

DoubleG, That sounds like an order of magnitude outlier given what most experience. Some discussion of carbon ring and how to remove it on here lately; might be your problem. Clean it to bare metal and borescope it is my vote. Seymour
