Cleaning a 17 HMR

I'd like to keep the accuracy up in my Anchutez 1717. No clue as to cleaning after x number of shots fired...

Wondering if anyone has struck apon up a good cleaning routine?

Though I'm the 3rd owner, my bore is nice and minty with less than 500 rounds total down the pipe ( I know both the other 2 guys) I shot around 150 rounds myself and the accuracy dropped off a bit so I ran a few patches thru it. Ist shot was a flat out flyer, then it took about 10 rounds for it to settle all the way down again.

Thoughts?

Was there any solvent on the patches? If not, then dry patches will have removed some of the most recent layer of fouling, but not everything. I wouldn't expect a few dry patches to clean a .22 after 500-ish rounds, especially shot over seversl sessions, and that's burning less powder in a larger bore.

As .17HMR bullets are jacketed you may have copper fouling too.

Did 3 wet patches with good old Hoppes #9, the 1st was a bit dirty 2, 3 were better. Then 3 dry. I'd have loved to get a bore brush down it, finally found my 2 missing brushes, so next go around I'll get it done correctly. Need a bore guide too

I'm running a CZ 457 with a Lothar Walther 17 hmr barrel. I've been shooting 50 round range sessions testing some ammo. I've been cleaning my barrel with Boretech C4 and a 17 caliber bronze brush. So far, after 400 rounds, I've kept carbon to a minimum and haven't seen any copper yet with my borescope. No carbon ring in the chamber yet either.

I ordered my bronze brushes and cleaning rod and jag from Dewey's. I make my own patches from white bed sheets I buy as cheaply as possible online. I'm also using a Possum Hollow bore guide.

I usually run a couple patches soaked with C4 through the barrel and let it soak for a while. Then dip the bronze brush in C4 and run 10 strokes, 5 down and 5 back. Rinse the brush with water and dip and stroke 10 more times. Rinse the brush in water and patch the barrel dry. Check it with the borescope. So far, so good.

I've used various methods to clean my .17's. Best results are always after allowing solvents to soak. I now use Wipeout a lot of the time, while other solvents like Shooters Choice are also very good. I like overnight soak, if time allows. Follow with bronze brush, around two or 3 strokes for every 25 rounds fired, followed by patches with solvent till clean. After heavy shoots, I've resorted to JB Bore paste applied to patch wrapped around nylon brush. About 20 strokes will usually get things looking quite nice.

Talking with one guy a respected writer who goes on prairie dog shoots who said he quit cleaning his CZ at all. He gave it a good cleaning & it quit printing tight groups till he got 25 rounds down the pipe, then back to normal.

Guess there all difference beasts
