Cleaning 10/22

There used to be place in the rear of the receiver that got a small hole milled though so it could be cleaned from the breech end with a conventional rod. Not sure if that's still a thing, or if it got axed for reasons. It still required disassembly including bolt removal, of course.

Pull thru, use a large enough patch for a snug fit, or smaller patches and double up for a snug fit, and some #9 sauce.

I drilled a hole in the rear of the receiver for cleaning and I tapped it for stabilization. I sent it back to Ruger to be rebarreled since the best accuracy at 50 yards was 1 1/2 inches. They replaced the barrel, but also replaced the tuned bolt with a stock one. It is a pain to tear the rifle down just to clean the barrel, but if you need to do a complete cleaning it is worth the effort.

I drilled the hole in my receiver as well. There used to be a jig floating around on rimfirecentral you could borrow for that purpose or you can buy/make one if you chose that route.

How are you guys doing it?
From the muzzle with a rod or with a pull thru??
Well it is a 10/22 and as such the tolerances are a bit to the loose side so it is unlikely that it will need cleaning all that often.

Just use a pull-through like a Boresnake for the bore, or if you want to upscale a bit then use an Otis, either will work just fine.

Wipe out inside the bolt raceway with a Q-Tip to get powder residue and clean the gunk out of the extractor slot from time to time.
If it needs a deeper cleaning then that then remove the action from the stock and use a spray cleaner.

Easiest way to clean a 10/22 sell it to someone else and buy a quality 22......I know guys who put $1k to get those rifles to shoot with a $400 savage, and then brag about what a great rifle it is.....it is a great pinker for a 12 year old......

Ok bore snake the barrel, spray the bolt & action with brake cleaner, a little oil and your good to go.....

I bought a Bergara/1022 almost clone. It has the hole in the back of the receiver from the factory (actually I read that they recently quit with the hole with no explanation). But the bolt has to come out, which means the stock has to come off, but it's not really bad. What is bad to me is dealing with compressing the recoil spring and trying to work the bolt back in. So I bought a Gunsmither bolt bar and extractor tool. It helps with compressing the spring to get that bolt back in. So, it's easier now.

Gunsmither 10/22 Tool

But overall, I'm not impressed with the Ruger design. I much prefer my Belgian Browning SA22. It's a breeze to take down.

Take down models are cinch !

There was another company that apparently infringed on the Ruger patents - and was making them with the hole in the back. Think they were sued out of business? Did Ruger ever do this? I've not seen one.

I think Thompson Center briefly made a not so subtle knockoff of the 10/22
Those are nice rifles. Nicely finished receiver and bolt compared to Rugers castings.
They have a "Last Shot Hold Open" feature built into the magazines. That HO feature
uses part of a Hold Open idea I patented about 20 years ago.

TC may have stopped making them, not sure?
