Cleaner powder than H110

Would like to use a cleaner powder than H110 for my M-1 Carbine and Hornet. Which one ???????????????? Mabey some Winchester 296, Little gun?

Tom

Hodgdon Lil Gun is superb in the Hornet. I don't know how it'll do in the .30 M1. I've used Viht N105 and N110 successfully in that cartridge.

I just looked at my h110 and ww296,they dont look the same as each other, are you sure about that.

VV N-110, but it's a touch faster than either H110 or W 296. 1-1.5grs less than H 110 so work it up easy. The plus side is it's MUCH cleaner. When you get the pressure right it's AWESOME.

jonbearman...You are exactly right....H110 and WW296 are NOT the same. Besides not even appearing the same, they DO NOT perform the same either. My preferance is H110 in my magnum handgun loads. My brother has complete satisfaction with H110 in his .30 Carbine. I have also used H110 with satisfaction in my .22 Hornet Contender.....gpoldblue

if you think H110 is dirty, you sure as heck better not switch to ww296!! I started out with 296 in a 44mag, and switched to h110 because I thought it was cleaner. I hate ww296, it is dirty!!!

Winchester 296 and H110 are the exact same powder.
I would suggest giving Lil Gun and Power Pistol a try.

Yes 296 and H110 are the same, always have been, and thats not apt to change..
Power up that H-110 and it will burn clean enough, at least it does in my FA 454..

I use both,h110 in 30 carbine and 296 in my 44 mag and the .218 bee and it burns clean in my ruger#1.I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM.iF YOU WANT DIRTY POWDER TRY RED DOT AND UNIQUE,IT IS LIKE BURNING COAL ALTHOUGH IT WORKS REAL WELL.Sorry caps lock on.

VV's propellants are the cleanest burning in my experience, pistol or rifle.

That being said, I've used H110, W296 and N110 in my various 44 Mags.

I'm rather fond of IMR 2400 too, but more for the intimidating muzzle flash it reliably provides. Probably dirtier than all the others :-\

I thank you all, for the suggestions. I have no problem with the accuracy of H110, but even at max load in my M-1 Carbine it is very dirty. Will try Lil Gun and the others and see what happens. Sounds like I will save my, money when it comes to the Win 296 and just skip that one.

Preacher got it right (again). Load H110 hot and it will burn clean. If you are not loading max loads don't use H110. I always liked H4227 for accuracy.

I can agree with John and preacher.
Used H-110 in a couple closet guns that might see one rd fired in a year. a 25-20W and 22Hornet.
Had lots of unburnt, halfburnt or whatever powder in the bores until I got to book max loads.
Was'nt really looking to hotrod these old guns but they shoot fine at top levels with no fouling problems. Undertneath that its messy.

Ive shot over 3000 rounds out of my 22 Hornet and 22K Hornet using W296 it shot so well for me, using the 30gr Berger, that I never thought of using anying else.
