So if I offered to give him what he was looking for for free, he couldn’t answer me? Bummer.;)
It was his last “rope” comment that turned my opinion. I thought our member’s responses were quite civil. The guys on SH would have been a bit harsher.

We get a little rough around here and most have thick skin with a good sense of humor. But that crossed the line. Good job Boss! What was the "Rope" guys name again?

MarkW,

Appreciate the words of solidarity, and we certainly want to encourage all members to pitch in. But I don't want to be create an "us vs. them" mindset.

I think the best thing is to let people know that member fees really are important and really do make a difference.

Here's an interesting perspective ... with 20000 active visitors per week, most spending multiple hours on the site, this Forum has a level of human involvement (eyeball hours), on a par with a medium-sized college. Meaning if you looked at the college student hours per week compared to Forum member man-hours per week, it would be similar.

That medium college might have 80 or more employees (admin, professors, librarians etc.)

This Forum is essentially operating with just ONE full time employee and a couple of volunteers. And that one employee is also tasked with producing 1000 articles per year.

Just think what this site could be with a full-time gun testing team, or a dedicated video producer, or even a traveling correspondent who could attend matches and meet members around the nation...

5 bucks an add plus 1 for every self imposed bump. Might sway some folks to contribute that otherwise would not.

So 97% are freeloadin, sounds to me like they must be liberals, they want something for nothing,

That's a pretty broad brush. There are many members that contribute a lot of GOOD information that aren't monetary contributors. I know some of them and they either don't shoot anymore and/or are living on fixed incomes. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

You were born Gold!:)

How'd that BBQ for the teachers turn out?
I was born just another poor kid from N.W. Florida, but worked darn hard to get where I am. BBQ turned out great, ask Kmart-Ken, showed up and got some.:cool:

On the subject of memberships....

It's a voluntary thing, and making membership required to post here would diminish the site content. Think everyone recognizes that....

Yet requiring membership to post classified ads is entirely reasonable. The Marketplace forums are a service provided by this site for the purpose of conducting business transactions, and no one should expect a facility for offering items for sale to a finely targeted audience to be absolutely free. So that's the first thing I'd do - require membership to view and/or post in the "non-commercial" Marketplace forums, no freebies period.

To stimulate membership, include any level of membership in the prize drawings, and post the drawing results in one of the forums. Must be present to win, response required within, say, 15 days else another name is drawn. Announce winners regularly, and make it easy to notice.

To recognize those contributors generous enough to contribute above and beyond the base membership category, setup a tab in the Notable Members section, and give it more emphasis than "Most Messages".

Smart as this site is, I bet none of these are new suggestions.

This is the only gun forum I know where you pay to sell, there may be some, I'm not involved in any. Matter of fact, this is the only site I know that asks for donations. I do not have issue with that though.
Snipers Hide has rule if not vetted(# of posts), you pay until you are. Not tough to get 100 posts.
I myself need no recognition to donate, I don't need to win a drawing, or do I need a ribbon. I've said this more than once, the ribbon just gives a self appointed sense of ownership. If you have something interesting to say, the ribbon means nothing IMO.
There are business's on here peddling goods under a gold ribbon that should be site sponsors.
The op in this case was never going to comply, with any aspect of the site, well "Bye"

There are numerous forums that demand paid membership for premium access, if not membership; the Savage firearms forum being one.

And while I agree, that for myself, the recognition isn;t necessary, seeing it certainly raises the confidence of dealing with an otherwise unknown individual, a long ways away from me.

Lol, I bet that is an interesting group. FB had a number of Creedmoor groups, I didn't last long in those either.
