Chubby necks

How much will they fatten up? Say 308 to 6mm, 6ppc to 22ppc, 6br to 22br, 223 to 19 or 20cal?
They will lengthen I'm sure. Any experience with thickness?

It will also depend if you are just sizing down the neck or taking the larger case and forming it down to the required case/cartridge. The later will more often than not, thicken and need neck trimming. Length of course also needs trimmed.

Okaaaay, thank you and - any merit to this idea?

Say from Palma 308 to 6mm: Buy a std reamer, McMaster Carr etc abt 7mm and run it in after the 7mm neck squeeze then take it down to the 6mm and neck turn to needs?
Or would a ream at 6.5mm or. 250 be better?

Orrrr? Just spitballing thinking reaming would be faster (floor drill press) than neck turning (no lathe).
I've only turned a handful of cases 15 yrs ago, so actually no experience there.
Suggestions welcome as I'm gearing up for a week + in the squirrel fields next Spring and again after first cutting.
Need lotsa brass for reloads to make the 3 day drive worthwhile. :)

Have a 20 and 19 w lotsa 223 brass squirrelled away so similar forming, reaming? questions.

TAJ45,

I did this with about 300 FGMM .308 to .243. None of them became longer, neck thickness at .243 stage averaged 0.017" and were short of standard .243 length by about 0.050". Started with the .308 brass neck turned to 0.013". They were sufficiently consistent for matches, but I'd rather buy good brass and neck turn it at this time.

Going from 308 or 243 Win to XC should work out length wise for me.
Allow me to verify what I think you said: 308 was turned to .013, then worked down which ended up w .017 for further massaging?

TAJ45,

Yep. YMMV somewhat. Testing to see if the neck variation in the end product are reduced, they are; but not eliminated. You've got to start with good brass to end up with good brass, so you may as well buy good brass to start with, then turn.

With 6xc being the end game using the 308 Palma, I agree w you abt starting with quality brass.
I'll have this winter to sort things out, remove donuts, turn necks etc etc.
