Chronographs, Chronographs, Chronographs!

So many new ones to choose from. The Lab Radar looks really interesting and it's great to read about them but really for myself, and a lot of other guys, when it comes down to it when I put on a new barrel I break out my old Chrony Beta Master, work up a load, and when the numbers are what I like that's it.
Then the Chrony goes back in the cabinet till the next new barrel. If the rifle is still shooting the way it's supposed to I see no reason to get it back out. I look at the new units out there and think "Boy that's nice", but then I think do I really need one, and the answer always comes back "No".

Danny, you and I operate almost the same. I always worked up my load with out a chrono, until I had it where I wanted it, then checked the data and logged it in. Then when I switched powder lots or bullet lots, I would use my Oehler Model 33 to tweak the velocities to where they belonged. Problem was setting up the chrono was a PITA, then I bought a Magneto speed 2min's. to set up, 1 min to break down. Did I need the Magneto speed, NO. Am I glad I bought it yes! When something goes amiss with a load that was working, it's the first thing I grab because of ease of setup. Old guys like me need easy!

With all these Magnetospeeds and the new Labradars going out, surely someone wants to sell their old, outdated, PITA to setup Oehler 35 reasonably? ;D

Tried my Magneto Speed Sporter today and I'm a little confused. :o First string of five was with a clean, cold barrel and the first round was about 35 FPS higher than the rest of the string. I chalked it up to cold barrel and went on shooting without the MS on the barrel. Later, I tried another 5-round string and had the same thing happen, this time the barrel was fouled, warmed up, but still the ES was about 45 FPS!! The first round is way high, then the other 4 seem to be within about 10-15 FPS of each other, where I would expect them.

I'm confused; I don't understand what the first round is doing that the others aren't. These are weighed and trickled charges so that should not be an issue.

We tried the MS on another gun, but got an "ERR 5" display - which seems to be related to sensitivity. I changed the sensitivity to Hi and the MS worked fine after that on the second gun.

Other than this minor glitch, the MS works really well and is so easy to set up and take down.

Any ideas on a really high first shot velocity?
