Chronograph numbers...

20PPC

last weekend my Grandson Remy and I were at the range practicing.
A friend of mine was there and he had a Magneto speed chrono with him.
Curious what speed we were getting out of Remy's 30 PPC I asked if we could use it to see where he was at.
I have little to no experience with a chrono so don't know how good his numbers were.
If I remember correctly for the 5 shots the velocity was
2902
2907
2907
2908
2915
and the SD was 4.6
In my mind that seemed pretty good but I don't really know if there is room for improvement or if I should be happy where its at.
Another friend of mine shot his 30 BR across it and I believe his ES was down in the low single digit and his SD was 2.4 so it looks like he needs to leave things alone.
I guess my question is should I still be tweeking the load for his gun ?

If you're getting those kinds of numbers consistently  . . . Hill NO! :)

Those #'s are fine. If it is a target gun I am assuming you are 1-2-300yds.Let the target dictate if you need to mess with seating, but if your charge #'s will repeat I think you are good to go......Curious, what powder are you using?

Regards
Rick

The real question is how did the groups on the target look? Dropping the ES/SD from 13/4.6 to ever so slightly lower values isn't likely to change how the rifle is grouping. If it's grouping well, I'd leave it alone.
Yes it is a short range score rifle.
The groups are very good and I shot one target with it at 100 yards and had 5 Xs with ease.
This is Remy's first year and he's doing very well so far but is still working on trigger control, with that being said he did shoot a 50 and 3 Xs at 300 yards at our last Orangeburg match.
As far as numbers go if I can get them any lower will it make any difference realistically in overall consistency or don't worry about it until he has more expierience and better gun handling skills.
@R.Morehouse we are shooting 29.9 gr if Viht. 120.

In my opinion if he can't out shoot the equipment yet there's no sense spending precious trigger time trying to get the equipment better... As in any and all sports the fundamentals are the biggest part of the game... Being consistent behind the rifle will pay off more than alot of things , especially trying to get what's great even better if you can't use it yet to it's full potential.... An old saying in the race car game is , you can put a good driver in a bad car and he will probably still win and put a bad driver in a good car and he will still lose... I think this applies to alot of things....

.

Until the skills are very fine tuned, you're not likely able to see any difference with numbers that low . . . particularly at the shorter distances. Even out to 1000, it'd be hard to see much difference in improving on those numbers unless one has some exceptional skills.

If you haven't read this articles yet, maybe it will give you some ideas:

I use that N120 (30.6) in a 30Major ( necked-up Grendel ) and it is the best for that as well........It's great you have your son enjoying the sport.

With those numbers ; and if the target was good , regardless of the distance , I'll repeat what my Grand-Dad told me once . "Don't start tryin to fix somethin that ain't broke" !
