Chronograph - need recommendation

Looking for a recommendation on which chronograph to purchase. I have been using a Chrony Beta model and am wanting something better. Please let me know what you have been using and why you like your chronograph. Thanks.

I just started using a PVM-21 instead of a Gamma Chrony. So far, it seems much more consistent and less sensitive to fluctuation light levels. I have had a couple of isolated readings that make no sense with what I am seeing on the target, but not whole strings like I had with the Chrony. I plan to do some comparisons before I sell the Chrony and I'll know more then.

I bought the CED Millenium because of the IR screen option. I do most of my load development in the evening after work; that wouldn't work without the IR screens. I actually block ambient light to maintain a consistent condition for the sensors. I've used an Oehler and the CED; the CED screens were much less fussy. The new version of CED's screens are supposed to be even better. I shoot molyed .22 caliber bullets at high velocity on ranges that are dark,grass-covered) or light,bare earth) with no problems. The IR screens run on batteries as well as AC, so they can be used anywhere.

If you're interested in the CED, I'd recommend buying it from Jim Ristow at Recreational Software; he's great to deal with and he usually has a deal to throw in a few extra bits at no charge. While you're there, check out the Shooting Lab software - I think it's the best ballistics/reloading package available.

ronemus.
Have you had any experience with the gadget RSI makes to measure pressure? also, how are you blocking the ambient light with your chronograph.
Thanks

Tony;

I haven't used the pressure trace, but I have heard good things about it. You might PM German Salazar as I'm fairly sure he uses one.

I glue cardboard to the top of the IR diffusers to block ambient light, and run on IR only; that probably provides more consistent light and more uniform results. If I want to run on ambient light I use the standard diffusers that came with the system.

Regards,
Alan

Thanks, Alan.
I have seen him using something to measure pressures in some of his PS articles, but I thought it might have something to do with the Oehler 43 system. I'll PM him.

I like my CED. It's never given me any reason not to. While I sometimes wish it had a printer, I don't consider that to be a deal breaker. The carry case for it is the best money you can spend. I almost didn't,very glad I did. If I had to get another chrono, I'd get the new model and pop for the IR screens as well. Not that I have had problems with the standard screens at all, I have just run into times that I would have liked to have had the IRs that I never anticipated.

I had a very positive result with the PVM-21 today. I had done some load development at 300 yards for a 600 yard match. I used ExBal to estimate the come-up for 600 yards from my 300 yard zero with the average velocity of 6 rounds shot through the PVM-21 and the new Berger 'shot' BCs. The first sighter went dead center in the X-Ring and I didn't need to adjust the elevation again. I have used that method in the past with my Gamma Chrony and always had to bring it up a few clicks to get the correct elevation even with the correct BCs. I was very pleased with the PVM-21, ExBal, and the new Berger BCs.
