Chronograph - distance from muzzle?

Far enough so the muzzle blast doesn't give you incorrect readings. That can vary for different cartridges.
 
With a muzzle brake you can go as close as two feet.

I like my MagnetoSpeed - about 4 inches in front of the muzzle. :)
 
To expand upon what Itchy said:

.223 Rem, I set at 10 feet, for 30/06 I set it at 15 feet. Due to the muzzle blast skewing the results.

Also, be aware that a bright sunny day can throw off the chrono. Best sun angle is from the side, directly overhead is bad. You'll have to experiment with your chrono to find what works best, and gives you consistant readings.
