Chrono at night

Can you Chronograph at night using led lights on the Chrono, just tossing this out to see if it's possible. I would use a laser to align gun then shoot. We use to test at 1000yds at night with gun already on target to bypass wind.

You could just purchase a Magneto Speed it operates on magnetic pulse and can be used in total darkness. If you're using a muzzle brake designed like field artillery piece it probably won't work.

I second the Magnospeed. They also have what they refer to as a "Large Brake Adapter", so that may work also.

The Sporter model is very reasonably priced. PM me and I can refer you to a reliable retailer with very good pricing.

I just bought a Chrony but if it don't work I may Holler Back

You would need to be sure that your light source (e.g. LEDs) would be constant and not pulse. For example, fluorescents pulse at either 60 or 120 Hz. We can't see it because of the latency of our eyes. If the power supply for the LEDs were not pure DC they might be strobing and you wouldn't know it. How much light you need is also another issue. Some chronograph manufacturers (e.g. CED) make lighting units specifically for using their chronographs in the dark.

There are at least two optical chronographs that have the ability to be used in total darkness. They both use IR sensors and a battery powered light source mounted on the chronograph.

Thanks for raising that point Doc. Knowing the technical differences between the various types of chronography, whether it's mechanical, light source or magnetic field interruption helps improve the understanding of how and why some things seem to provide better solutions than others.

I've always wondered why they say you cant use fluorescent lights thanks for letting me know about this I'm learning something every day

Just something to keep in mind. Everyone seems to think the sensors have to point upward toward the sky. But that is only when you limit yourself to letting sunlight brighten your diffusers to create the bullet shadow.

I have seen lots of chrono setups where the folks either had the sensors pointing sideways or downward to address lighting issues. So you could use a piece of white posterboard where a light is cast on it (meeting the requirements as listed above). You don't have to try and mount the lights above the sensors. You just want the bullet to create a shadow or dark spot between the sensor and the bright area.

My experience with dual eye-sensor chronographs is they are more accurate and less prone to error, when false lighting is implemented into the setup, that darkness or enclosures play very well to.
My own favorite setup with eye-sensor type, is with a CED-M1 w/Infrared at night or in the darkest conditions.

We used to use those battery powered,"emergency" lights (Panasonic,100$) that are used in commercial buildings. This was inside shooting range. We were using the chrono for bow testing.Worked OK.

After a few years, just moved outside. We never could get it to work with fluorescents.
