Chrome lined barrels

Reading the Petersons Rifle shooter Nov/Dec 2008

on page 50 there is an article on Tactical rifles

the write up on the FNH-USA SPR- A3G

says the barrel is chrome lined and the rifle survived a 10'000 round test and came out the end still shooting 1/2 moa groups

Where can you buy chrome lined barrels??

I have several friends who would shoot 10'000 rounds a year as part of their business

They go through a barrel a season and with the massive wait and paperwork hassles getting quality barrels out of CONUS to here in Australia

If they could fit chrome lined barrels it could make their life easier all round.

The article meantions that chrome lining is a difficult process without compromising accuracy
Their accuracy requirement is a CD sized group at 200 or smaller- day in day out- all the time.

Does anyone know who the barrerl supplier for FNH-USA is??

Does anyone know a barrel supplier who offers chrome lined barresl?

Thanks

Ogre,
I have chromed several bbls in my time but also chromed the chamber at the same time. I built up .0002 on the ID only and the same for the chamber. The first one I ever did was for a.25 Neidner, forerunner of the 25/06) and it still drives tacks after 40 years. Remember now that this will close the bore by .0004. I started with a blank I cut oversize to compensate for this. You cannot really shoot these things out and I suggest it to anyone who considers it. Sorry, but I don't know where to get one done today, but if masked properly I don't see why anyone in the plating business can't do it for you. Call out for a "flash chrome, .0002 max." LOL

One local PD, here in Md., recently purchased the FN sniper rifles. They brought 3 to me, 3 to a retired armorer from their dept., and 3 to the USSS armorer. All of these rifles had chrome plated bores. They did not shoot as well as the "POS Remingtons we've had for years", a direct quote from the squad commander. After inspecting the bores, with a borescope, it was determined that the bores had not been lapped and had been plated over some fairly rough tool marks. All of these barrels fouled very badly, after the first 5 or 6 shots, and accuracy dropped off considerably. The rifles were replaced by the dealer and they were just as bad. The PD ended up going with another brand of tactical rifle.
I believe that chrome plating a bore would be great for durability but, only if the bore has been lapped, will it be good for accuracy.

Your better off buying a quality barrel from noted barrel maker and having it hardened. Jtech i believe is the company. I have seen barrels go to 4,000 rounds with the process. Speedy gonzales at trinidad college know the address.
I wish i ccould help more, maybe someone on the board has the address/ They harden oil drilling bits .
My friend bob had one done and just took it off after 4,000 + rounds . Benchrest accuracy tapered off. It still shoots half inch. The barrel will also take a set back. Make sure to get one long enough for this and you should be good for quite a while

Just to thrown in another opinion: have you tried True-Flite? Should be much less paperwork since they're located in NZ.

Based on your, friends') stated accuracy requirement, I'd say any quality 308 barrel can go for 10'000 rounds if chambered and installed properly.

And after 10'000 rounds, the cost of rebarreling is probly less than trying to fiddle with chrome-lined barrel for, say 10'000 more rounds. Especially if you can get regular barrels with much less hassle/paperwork.
