Choosing an action

I am looking into building a switch barrel rifle for hunting purposes. I am interested in the 6.5-284 as a deer round, I like the accuracy and range potential of this round. I am wanting to shoot 140 grain Sierra GameKings. I am pretty sure that I will have to go woth a long action for this build to have a repeater. My question is can you get a 6br to reliably feed from a long action, or will it need to be fed single shot? With action would be better for the build Remington 700 or a Savage? I would like to keep the build on a short action but don't have any data on the 260 remington. Any insight would be appreciated.

If you want both a 6mm and a 6.5mm and you want both of them to feed, then you might consider going with a Remington 700 short action. You can get a 6BR to feed from a SA box very well with the modification described here in the articles section. Instead of a 6.5-284, you could go with a 260 Ackley or 6.5x47 Lapua and not have to worry about feeding or having to shoot single shot. Both of these cartridges will get you in the same ball park as the 6.5x284 with a tad more barrel life and short action feeding. For deer---trust me,, they will never know the difference. Search the articles archive on the main page for the 6mm BR box conversion. Good pics and instructions. The 6mm BR is a joy to shoot and very easy to load for. Try appx. 30 grains of Varget and a 95-107 and you are good to go. On the 260 Ackley, you can neck up Lapua 243 brass with a tapered expander and then fireform your brass. Look at the 6.5x47 as well.
