Cheek Weld & Risers

I have my first bolt action together, but I can see my cheek weld requires slightly lower rings or a higher comb. I am using medium height Burris Signature Zee rings with plastic inserts and they don't come in "low" height, so going lower is out. The stock is a Bell & Carlson Medalist tactical style, and while the popular Karsten riser works, I personally would rather not start drilling holes in the stock. Is there any non-permanent solution that also allows the rear of the stock to ride in a Protektor rabbit ear sand bag (the strap on types typically fit around the bottom of the stock)?

This is an interesting concept, but from what I can tell, fits specific stocks only and rather not go through the hassle of a custom fit for something I can find very little info on.

I have known and been a personal friend of Dan Criswell for over 10 years, and I was with him on the development of these from the start - I think mine is the 3rd ever made.

In the beginning, we affectionately called them "Stock Tacos".

The folks that endorsed these on his website are the absolute top of the food chain in rifle shooting. Send Dan an email and inquire about what you are looking for.

It is the real deal...

Thank you. Will fire off the e-mail and see what can be done.

I just got an email this morning from the owner, and he has had to stop making them (for medical reasons)... so they are no longer available.

Thanks for the tip on the Triad. After some trial and error with scrap Styrofoam, I determined I needed about .450" rise. Knowing that, I decided to buy this (Bradley Cheekrest BUL model).

It has 1/2" rise. I should get it in a couple of days and will report on how well it fits.

I have used strap on pieces for hunting rifles and they seem to work ok. However, the Karsten is an easy install ... just lay it out and double check measurements before drilling. I would not hesitate to install another Karsten.

I thoroughly considered the Karsten, but have this thing about permanent modifications to equipment. A dumb thing I know..., but one of my personal foibles. I also could not find how low the Karsten could go. 1/2" might be a tad too much height. The Bradley I ordered is 1/2" and should be OK I think. We will see. And it is not permanent.

+1 on the Karsten. I installed one on my M1A (black nylon) stock for use with the scope. They are well made, durable and can be set very low for shooting without the scope.

I too had the phobia about modifying my stock with a couple of drillholes, But I got over it. If need be, I can always fill the holes with Bondo and spraypaint to cover the defect. I would not hesitate to do so again.

Lesson learned for me. Next stock will have built in cheek riser. After experimenting, I quickly saw how critical it is to have a very good fit between shooter and gun. Ironically, on my AR-15, the scope is a bit too LOW. The Armalite one piece mount is about the lowest out there.

Brownells sell stick on risers in different heights. Myself, I just add duck tape untill desiered height and offset are acheived. I know it looks awfull but I don't think any worse than those bolt on's.
