I did miss that. If the cheap ball mic is not on his list he might as well guess.

I can't really dispute that. I have the same ball mic you linked to. I had to make a depth stop for mine, and I could use a desk stand to free up two hands for using it, but it does the job.

Correction, that "ball mic" you linked to on Ebay isn't for small ID tubing, but it does have "ball" or hemispherical rather than flat contact points. It doesn't have the narrow post anvil we associate with our tubing mics.

If you look at the anvil on that particular mic, it really won't work for most case necks.
I wasn't against getting a ball mic. I've already asked at one local pawn shop. I was just looking for an alternative. I didn't know if there might be some sort of < $20 set of feeler gauges or tool I didn't know about. BTW, I solved the problem by chucking each case in the lathe and returning the necks.
