I admit I don't shoot pistol enough. I am focused on F-open shooting and put all my time there. Of course I don't get to carry a pistol here in CA. But I do maintain proficiency for home use and I've made a note to myself to take my pistol to the range with me monthly and stop by the pistol range. I don't want to find fault but some of the folks in the video were not as practiced as they should have been. --Jerry

Im up to 500 rounds this year through my glock 17. I still don’t feel comfortable enough to shoot it if SHTF. I want it to be instinctual. I bought a 9mm SBR for home defense, just because I don’t like where I am at with my glock at the moment. I’m going to be anxious now thinking about people who carry but don’t shoot enough. Glad the guy in Texas was able to put his skills into action and make the shot count. A true hero.

My brother in law is on a church security team. I am a firearms instructor for a large West coast firearms training school. He brought a pistol to my house and asked me to look at it. Great now all you need is training! He shot 50 rds already before he came out and said that was enough. wow remind me never to attend when your there or I set behind you to be safe.

If you are going to be on a security team GET TRAINING! To draw and shoot a head shot on demand as this gentlemen did does not come without training or divine intervention you pick.

A friend I hunt with is on his church’s security team. They get a lot of training, enough to all have a state issued private security license.

If you are going to take these measures to protect your friends and family it’s critical to get the training necessary to make it effective. It would seem the church in the story did that

I admit I need to get out and practice more from a holster draw. It had been quite awhile since I had gotten out and practiced. The last time out( a week ago) I shot about 150 rounds from a 22 semiauto. shooting 30' at an 8" bull. These were shots taken with self defense in mind not Bullseye Shooting. I was able to keep most shots in a 6" circle of the 8" bullseye target. after shooting the 22 semiauto, I loaded up the 9MM and practiced the same way shooting at the same 8" Bull target (60 rounds). With this too I was able to keep most shots in the 6" circle of the 8" Bull.

I intend to start getting out more often working on shooting from a draw, too many crazy things starting to happen in the US. (probably going to be a little less frequent until Spring as I don't enjoy shooting outdoors in an open range when its 20 degrees). I have steel targets I can set up as to deflect bullet strikes downward. I believe 6" and 8" targets Shot anywhere from 21' to 45' will be my goal with the 90-100% strike @ 21' on the 6" and a 8" target @ 45' with 90-100%.

Practice regularly until goal is met and then enough to keep proficient.

People need to take a look at their holsters too. Some of these “deep concealment” holsters are just a way to transport a pistol not actually use it.

This instructor makes a lot of sense, however, if I was faced with the situation in the church, I’d rather have the guy that took the thug out on my side.

Oups, he mistook the church for a gun free zone. He won't make that mistake again. It's a shame the guy near him was so slow on the draw and got shot first. He probably didn't know the situation was that serious.

Correct. I carry on ankle and a NAA in pocket holster neither of which is easily accessible. Good thoughts. This proves fractions of a sec count.

Another thought is you should go shoot that naa at something. I shot a plastic milwaukee drill carrying case at 7’ and it didnt even penetrate it. I always thought it was better to have the naa than nothing but youd probably have to touch the temple to do any good with it.

What do members consider to be a fast holster draw to firing an “on target” shot? Best I could ever do was ~1.5 seconds from a race holster shooting in USPSA. That was in my younger days, with my hand next to the gun, knowing the close proximity of a static target, and while anticipating the start signal. That the gentleman in Texas without warning, likely drew from a concealed carry rig, became situationally aware, moved to create an unobstructed bullet path, and appears to have made a head shot from over 25 feet under duress on a moving target in 6 seconds is simply amazing... well done sir!!!

The thing that grips me most (and you all make good points BTW) is that dear lady who just saw her sheep dog daddy die right in front of her. Her wails cut right into my heart.

That said, in better days when my eyes didnt suck, my knees would still bend, my average run out of a duty rig (295 level two) and a Glock 22 was .68 to first round, (starting with a pen in my hand at belt buckle level) and round two was falling at 1.4. A six round bowling pin drill at twelve feet was done under 5.2 seconds. And you can't outdraw a gun leveled at you. That gunfight was lost ten minutes before it started.

Sadly, now I carry a sissy pistol in my pocket and this sure made me rethink the pain I feel every time I wear a full size rig. Maybe I need to...and darn sure need to hit the range where I can work a dynamic target set-up...not these stupid "ranges" that won't allow real work to be practiced.

Awhile back when i was way more practiced average time from a surrender was .75-.8 second range. I shot lots of action pistol, steel and started out shooting IPSC. I cant do that now.

Info was published about the shooter. Summary, he was homeless, had two aggravated assault charges spent ~120 days in jail, had a brother who committed suicide, and was a member of the church he attacked. He was taken in by the church. Don’t know his motive. He wasn’t on any watch lists. No info on how he got the gun.

I know a church in San Antonio that has the lighting and video guys with AR's in the control both. The ushers are armed with pistols. The church leaders in Texas are having classes taught to them on security practices.

Yes I must do that. I have used the 22lr cylinder butnot the 22mag. I carry the mag cylinder with the speer short barrel ammo which I NEED to try. No excuse I need to get it done.
