.17 Mink and 20 Vartarg?

Does a .17 Mink and a .20 Vartarg sound like a good combo on a switch barrel rifle to cover me for the 17 cal and 20 cal?

For a 17 cal i wanted something a little smaller than a fireball... and for the 20 cal i wanted something about the side of a fireball... this is what ive finally come down to after about a year or thinking about it...

I prefer Bee brass so my recommendation would be .17 Ackley Bee. I get 3925 fps with the 20 grain Z-Max from a 24" barrel. Many, many reloads and none lost, with annealing of course. JMHO

If you're using a Thompson Contender frame, then you're fine. If you're considering a bolt-action rifle, then there's a challenge. The Mink uses a rimmed-case head 22 Hornet as its parent case, which is different than the bolt face used for a non-rimmed cartridge (Vartarg uses 221 Fireball as parent case).

Call Bob Green. He built my .17Ackley Hornet/20TAC xp-100. I like your choices for cartridges. If you can't find someone that wants to work on a sako extractor to pull both cases then you might look at a 17 based on the 327 case. It has the same rim as a .223 if I remember correctly.

Crap! I thought a 22 hornet and 223 had the same bolt face going for them...

why not a 17 Mach IV and a 20 VT. You can buy large amount or Lapua 221 brass and use your 20 VT die for the first step down in making your 17 Mach IV brass saving you the cost of a form and trim die and you will have a lot more punch with the Mach IV. If you go that way get a 1:9 twist 17 cal barrel so you can shoot 30gr Kindler Golds in it, makes a great round for prarie dogs up to coyotes

I went simple......

.17 Fireball and .20-221AI.
I never thought of that one..what kind of speed are you getting with the .20-221 AI. Kind of seems like overkill or by making a .20-221 AI. It ruins it's efficiency..
I'm not knocking your cartridge choice and mean no disrespect. .
I think the .20 Cal's are perfect..one of the things that draw me to the fireball case , is it's ability to perform in such a small case, little powder. What do you gain by making it an AI...
