Chassis Options

I’m gathering parts for my next gun build. I have the 22 cal barrel and action is a Savage Target Short Action. I have several rifles with laminated wood and HS Precision stocks and just wanting something different. All chassis I have seen so far come with magazines but this Savage Action is a single shot action so no way a magazine will work with it. Anyone know of any chassis options that will work with this action?

Assuming you are not gearing up for ERL. Many PRS stages are 10 rounds in 1:30. Top loading is going to put you at a serious disadvantage. I would consider investing in a different action for this sport.

This gun will just be for shooting with buddies on the weekend, no competitive shooting. If I was building a competition gun I probably would start with a better, more expensive action and different caliber. Guess I a little out of place here because this forum is for mostly competitive shooting but figured someone on here might know what I am looking for. I actually prefer not having a magazine because many times they require seating the bullet deeper than I would like.

I don't know of a Chassis built for a single shot without a magwell. You are probably going to get all kinds of suggestions.

Well darn.. If that is the case I am just going to have to find a regular stock like my other rifles have. Just wanting to find something that looks different.

Joe can fix you up. I have a few of his chassis.

FWIW... XLR made me a custom solid bottom single-shot version of their Carbon chassis a number of years ago. Don't rule out special order as an option until you ask.

That is what I am looking for! I am liking the look of their Tactical/PRS Chassis. Will probably be getting ahold of them sometime. I also didn’t mind the thought of getting a regular chassis and putting a dummy mag in it. Opens me up to a lot more options. Thanks for the replies!!

Here is a sample of an ARS chassis. This one is on a Savage single shot target action 338 Lapua with the smallest weight box on the side. They don't even have to be attached. Lots of options.

Neat-looking setup. If a smaller or larger bolt knob was desired, I presume you could ask the mfg. to use a .410 or 10 gauge shotshell base instead?

As to chassis in general, I'm puzzled by the way they are pictured and sold by the manufacturers. For example, MDT had their (supposedly famous) 'Black Friday' sale a bit over a week ago. Aside from their website crashing repeatedly, and thus being unable to score one of their MDT 'ACC' chassis on special, I was contemplating their LSS-XL which was also on sale.

But just before I clicked the 'order' button, I finally got a message back from their overwhelmed 'Chat' feature, in which the rep informed me that the 'chassis' did not come with a buttstock, or grip, or magazine. Despite the picture here: https://mdttac.com/us_en/lss-xl-gen2-chassis-system.html

Now I'm not the sharpest blade in the drawer, but not as dull as chalk either, and it seems to me that these chassis outfits should make it VERY PLAIN -- especially with pictures -- that what you're buying is just the part that holds the barreled action. With MDT's lineup at least, you must also purchase -- separately -- a buttstock, grip, and magazine. I guess a chassis by itself isn't nearly as impressive in pictures as one that is all kitted out, but I was chafed.

Maybe this is all taken for granted in the PRS realm, but I needed to vent.

I won't do it justice like the previous owner but this is the rifle Randy Wise set the NRA ELR World Record with in Indiana.

Looking forward to shooting it this summer. Hard to beat the Savages for the money.

Just curious, what does that rig weigh, as pictured? I saw a guy with a fancy PRS rig at my local range recently, and he said his setup weighed about 21 lbs. (And I guesstimate that he had $8k+ in it... )

Roughly 19lbs without the Remple bipod. Randy shot it in the light class which I think is 25lbs and under. Randy gave me a heck of a buddy deal but even adding the NF ATACR scope and Remple it's about half that cost.

With the narrow side panels (narrow, medium and wide available) and hollow forend the weight can be adjusted with lead shot to about any weight you'd want. With no added weight the gun is very pleasant to shoot.
