Changing barrel on Remmy 700 muzzleloader

I recently changed the barrel on my Remington 700ML muzzleloader from a .54 caliber to a .50 caliber.
Old one came off fine, new one spun on fine.
Problem: the new one spins on further than the old one with the old recoil lug. Not a really big deal, but the sights can't be reinstalled. I have to mount a scope.
Can I add shims between the recoil lug and barrel to get it indexed with the sights at the top? I Don't have access to a lathe. I'm looking at a 1" ID shim kit with .001, .002, and .004 shims.
Any suggestions?

Given the hard recoil those have, I would get an oversize recoil lug and surface grind it to fit the barrel. Alternatively, fix the barrel so it fits properly.

This is the best way. That's what I'd do.

How much it go past TDC in terms of degrees of rotation

Hand tight it's about 170°, I believe once it's torqued, it will be 180° off. So the bottom of the barrel would be on top, basically 1/2 of a complete revolution.

Need about a .030 thicker lug? What is the thickness of the lug you have I’ll dig through mine and see if I have something that will work

Doesn't the barrel need head spaced to the bolt? Won't it (bolt) need to close tight enough so there is no gap between the bolt face and the back of the primer. I don't know, that's why I'm asking but seems you would want the bolt face tight against the primer.

It's a muzzleloader, so there's a breach plug in the chamber end of the barrel. As long as the primer goes off, headspace isn't that much of an issue as it is in a center fire rifle.
Breach plug is threaded and adjustable, so barrel fit isn't critical for that, but where the sights end up is more valuable to me.

Buy another lug that will screw up tight a little past TDC and then shim it back. I have several barrels for two Model 12 BR rifles. Every time I change a barrel I have to time the brake. One royal pain in the butt. Just .002'' off center terrible.

I did not have anything thick enough for you. I can grind one down to .160" if you think that will work. It theoretically should allow it to go 1/2 turn more which should be close. IDK anything about how the muzzleloaders work or what if any clearances are required. Happy to grind one and send it off to you gratis if you think it will do the job.
