Changing a Bolt Handle

Anyone change a bolt handle on a Remington bolt . How big of a job is it? How big of a job to get it timed to the action ? And do you know anyone that does it ??

Jim Cloward in Machias WA does a beautiful chrome handle; longer and swept a little like an old Winchester M70 knob. I know a lot of people like the big ole dog-ball tactical style knobs; Jim's reminds me of a chrome shifter on a classic muscle car!

Here are some pictures that show it on my 40X Palma rifle... not the best pictures, but hopefully they'll give you an idea of what I'm talking about. This is the second match rifle I've had him do this mod on; obviously I like it a *lot* :thumb: I keep telling him he needs to do one w/ a matte black finish, maybe DuraCoat or something... probably sell 'em by the dozen to the tactical crowd!

HTH,

Monte

I had my gunsmith install the Holland handle and really like it. AM having him do my other Rem also.

My shooting partner did it, unfortunately, he does no work for others. Luckily I keep myself in his good graces and am able to get my stuff worked on.

Art,if you like to do things yourself, you might want to do what I did.I ground off the bolt knob, thus elonggating the shank. Then I welded another knob on the end gaining about a 1/4" of length .I kept the bolt body in a pan of water so as not to effect the heat treat.Everything worked out fine.

I have been giving a lot of thought to doing it myself, but just don't know yet.

And to everyone else,
And just want to thank everyone for their posts.

Terry Cross of KMW does a VERY NICE "tactical" bolt handle for about $100. Strong, easy to grip, and made of steel. Just ship him your bolt and get it back with the new handle in about 10 days. Highly recommended.

Terry was recently interviewed by 6mmBR.com. You can see pictures here: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek046.html and http://www.snipersparadise.com/vendors/KMW/KMW.htm

Also, here's a tweak by somebody else that's intended to strengthen the connection of the bolt handle to the bolt body: http://www.hdrifles.net/Rem700BoltMod.html

Good luck,

Lefty.

Here is a picture of my XP action that I'm redoing.
1- I turned the bolt shroud
2- Filled in the safety cut out
3- my own lathe turned bolt handle
4- Fluted the bolt
I have trued the front of the receiver and the lugs, still have the bolt lugs and bolt face to do then it's to the chrome shop for hard chrome.
