CHAMBERING

Richard Franklin has a really nice video of rifle metalwork that I purchased this past summer. Be aware that it's primarily intended for Benchrest quality chambering, crowning, and barrelwork using a lathe and not really a home gunsmithing course. Be what it is it's well worth the $24 I paid for it and Richard's a nice guy to deal with to boot.

"The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting" by John L. Hinnant

Brownells carries it. Well worth the cost.

If your interested in instructional DVDs I'd give http://smartflix.com/ a try ..... you rent the DVD for a week for $9.99 and then return it, postage already paid.

They have several DVDs on Barrel/chambering work :

- How-To Re-Barrel & Blueprint Military Bolt Action Rifles

- Gunsmith 3: Truing the Action and Installing a New Barrel

- Metal Working for a Rifle Smith ...with Richard's Custom Rifles

- Super Tuning The Factory Rifle Course ...with Darrell Holland

- Building The Ultimate Tactical Or Varmint Rifle ...with Darrell Holland

And lots of other firearm related DVDs ...... I don't mean to sound like a shill for smartflix, I'm just a happy customer.

I have not viewed the video yet,it's on the way) but Gordy Gritters does an excellent job of building extremely accurate long range competition rifles.
I would expect it to contain some very good info.

I'm a retired machinist hopefully that will help. I just do'nt want to screw up a new barrel. Whats the old saying measure twice cut once. Thanks Rich

If you are a real machinist you will be way ahead of the eight ball.

I have a library of Gunsmithing books, Willis Fowler's book ADVANCED REBARRELING OF THE SPORT RIFLE,is a down and dirty book that teaches the basics. Steve Acker's book THE GUNSMITH MACHINIST is another. John Stranahan's book PRESISION RIFLE REBARRELING AND CASE PREPATION ON TH HOME SHOP LATHE is another.
MARC STRATTONS and JOHN HINNANTS books are very good even thought they stray from the basics.

I like the old masters books that have been out of print since before the 1950's. You have to hunt to find them.

On BR.com, Grizzly is offering a new chambering DVD. Haven't seen it. It is free to new Grizzly owners and $59.95.

I like Mr. Hinnant's book, also. Excellent drawings. He has a smaller handbook on blueprinting Remington actions, too. A.G.I. has tapes and DVD's on all kinds of gunsmithing, including some by Darrel Holland on barreling. I haven't seen any of them, but would expect them to be good.

Enjoy, Tom

Rustystud, real machinist? made a living for 35yrs trying to be one. No i've been away for a few years better to ask than make mistakes. I'm lucky i guess i can go back to were i worked a still use the shop and make a few toys. Rich
