Chambering wilson seating dies / Gretan vs Viper jig?

Any preferences on the Gretan vs Viper "action truing jigs" ? I'd plan on using it to dial in custom dies.

I know I can make one - The cost of metal is so high right now it's not worth it.

Either one of them will do you well, I have no regrets with mine from Greg..
I use it mainly on 16" XP barrels...

Pastor's fixture is great, but the idea can be approved upon. I made one for a chunk of steel from ebay ($30 or so) and some lathe and mill time. It is much more rigid because it threads directly to my spindle and it's made of steel:

I'll definitely build my own as my strengths and other tools in the shop improve. I'm just getting going right now.

I wouldn't think either one is best choice for dialing in a Wilson die. I'd rather use a collet. I've got full set of 5C and ER40 and would probably use the ER40 set-tru but either will work well.

With a 4 jaw chuck, I can't imagine why an action fixture would be needed to make a seating die...

You can dial a die in coaxial in a 4 jaw. You just need some overhang and a lead hammer.

I thought you were trying to set a custom die up dead true in a lathe in order to modify it so that the areas that you modify will be truly straight with the areas that are not touched.

I have done this more than a few times, and just use a 4 jaw independent chuck. It takes about five minutes to true it up, then do what you have to do.

This is just basic machinist Stuff.

By the way, if you need a piece of steel, I have literally tons of it laying around. You pay te shipping and I will give you a suitable piece.

I made this to hold Wilson and Newlon dies.
3.300” long, 1.750” OD, 1.010” ID, 1/4-28x.75” brass set screws. Put it in 4 jaw, with the rear set of screws in between the jaws. Not much material cost, not much time, works perfectly.

I made pretty much the same thing years ago. Works well. Commonly (or not so commonly?) known as a Bell Chuck

and a lead hammer.

Lead hammers are great for knocking in that final tenth or so on chucks, jaws, parts, etc. I've got a dedicated little Cook on the lathe cart
