Chambering Options

First off, amazing site. I have a couple questions that hopefully someone can help me out with. I am thinking of having a 223AI built. In reading and checking the net on chamberings and reamers I have seen the word "match" after some options. Is this a tighter that SAAMI spec chamber or one that requires neck turning? Also, I will be going with a 8 twist barrel for 80gr A-Max or SMK bullets. Any recommendations on throat length? Also, if I have the barrel set up for the heavy bullets, how much accuracy will be lost if I decide to load some 50gr bullets to plink? It is going on a Rem700SA that will be trued at the time of the barrel installation. Thanks in advance.

I may be missing something but from my perspective the term 'Match' is meaningless.

This is how I start out:
Purchase a small number of bullets and brass from a source that has plenty. Pickup a set of cheap dies, and make a few dummy rounds for measurement. Then search existing reamers, or fill out a new reamer print to order what you need.
Reamers don't cost much, and you can use the finish reamer to have better dies made after fireforming.
Determine the twist needed for your bullets based on your measurements and expected local air density when shooting.
Then you can order your barrels,I get them in pairs), and seater die blank,to be chambered with the barrels and your reamer).
When you have all metal in-hand and can get a gunbuilder to accept your expectations,in B&W), there is a possibility of things going smooth..
You can then order a bunch of brass of the same lot, and atleast enough bullets for load development.

Good Luck friend

Zed; I would call the reamer grinder and ask what "match" means, and if it even applies to the Ackley Improved chamber. It could mean long throat, tight neck, or? I'm guessing the 700 s/a mag well,~2.7") will take a long o.a.l. in that caliber, so you probably wouldn't have to single load.

I can't explain it, but I've seen Colt 1 in 7 barrels shoot m.o.a. with the 40 and 45 gr Winchester ammo. Never saw one that liked the 55 gr ball, though. I've got a Walther 1 in 9 that likes the 62 gr ball and the 75 gr Hornady bthp. As time goes on, I know less and less.

Mikecr has the right idea; dummy up some loads with the bullets you want to shoot and see what you need for throat length. The reamer may exist already. I really like dealing with Dave Manson and would call him.

You didn't say what caliber the Rem action is in. It needs the small bolt face and if it has that,it may also have the mag box that can feed that round.

Sounds like a good project. Have fun, Tom
