Chambering a DIE

Ok fellows,
I any trying to get some info on chambering a bushing die for the 284 Winchester. Like a neck bushing and shoulder bump die.
1:How do you tell when the reamer is a the point it needs to be for a .002 shoulder bump?
2: If I am right this will not full length resize the case so with the shoulder being bumped back .002 will I ever have to fl resize. Or do you think it's best to FL resize at every reload? Thanks for everyones info. I'm learning as I go.

At some point, you'll have to size the web down a little. I'd chamber a custom FL die made slightly smaller than your chamber reamer. The manufacturer of your chamber reamer should be able to grind you a FL die reamer as well.

I have heard of using the chamber reamer to ream a sizing die so you would have identical dimensions. I haven't been able to figure out how to squeeze the neck down to get bullet grip. How do they do it?

If you make your die from 12L14 with your chamber die then have it heat treated it will shrink about .002 just right for FL sizing. Other wise you are going to have to buy a undersized reamer to make your die.

It gets machined to hold a bushing like the Wilson dies.

For $70 Harrell's will send you a F/L sizer that is .002 undrsize in 6ppc and 6BR. I would call and ask them about a .284. They will need two fired cases, assuming they can do the 284 caliber.

You would be better off using a FL die all the time.
I don't think Harrells makes a die for the 284 Winchester, they do just the PPC's and the BR's...

I think you'd be just as well served by buying a Redding Type S bushing neck die and another in the full length version. That way, you could neck size till they got snug, then full length size them, or, you'll find out shooting "warmer" loads, you're better off full length sizing them every time. I had a custom bushing/bump die built for my 6.5-284 with the finish reamer, had it hardened, and it doesn't size the web enough, so I just use the full length type s die every time.

When you buy your reamers just make sure to buy a RESIZE reamer and not a Roughing reamer along with your finish reamer. The resize reamers are generally ground .003 under the dementions of your finish reamer

One easy way to do it is to order your chambering reamer based on which full length sizing die you plan on using, for instance Dave Kiff can grind a chambering reamer to match the use of a Redding FL die.
