Chamber reaming ?

Chambering proof 6mm barrel for a 6x45x223 chamber and all was working great and making last cuts and reamer and reamer holder started spinning And stopped lathe and reamer was difficult to remove ! It just quit cutting ! It seemed like i hit a hard spot in barrel and dulled the reamer edges ! Never had this happen has anyone hit a hard spot in a barrel ?

Flush system?
Make of reamer?
How many bbls chambered?
Reamer holder brand?
I take care of my reamers and keep’’em sharp. Before switching to a Manson floating reamer holder I used a handheld and would bite and take it out of my hand, never any damage to the chamber though.
How’s the chamber? any damage?

Guess ! The main worry is a hard spot in barrel ! Reamer was 4D teamer rental so I couldn’t tell how many barrels it had done fefore I used it . Reamer was floating type holder ! Got it from Brownells Several years ago

I do not rent reamers any longer. I suspect that's where your problem started.

Buy once, cry once.

Never liked guess! Work..

Rented reamer says enough for me. No telling what it has seen.. Hard spot might just be the dull reamer…

If you are lucky, They won't charge you for a new reamer! My first and only reamer rental a long time ago I got charged for a new reamer. It looked like it was ready for the scrap heap when I got it in the mail. Every inch of it had been hand stoned and had grind marks on it, Looked like it had done a couple hundred chambers. It screwed up my chamber, When I complained about it, I was repaid by getting hit on my card for a new reamer. Never rented one again. You can usually buy a new one and get at least half back sometimes more when and if you sell it and you are using a new reamer.

But my guess your problem is the reamer got loaded with chips and seized up. Small reamers load up quickly.

Probably not a hard spot, though the barrel may have work hardened a little. Odds are, the reamer was just a little soft anyway and was ground with insufficient clearance. I would sharpen it, but it being a rental complicates matters. WH

Well ! I didn’t rent reamer, was doing it for friend ! He rented reamer and sent it to me with a used barrel . Started life as a 6 mm creed . Good news I grabbed some dark thread cutting fluid and Thought I would try it and reamer started cutting and finished cutting chamber and it turned out perfect ! Still scratching head on this one ! I never rent reamers and dang sure wont after this !

did you bore the chamber first or cut the whole thing with the reamer or what? Ive got a couple short chambered barrels to finish and though its tempting to rent reamers im gonna bite the bullet and get new ones. threads like this help remind me- thanks.

Did you leave any remnants of the "old" throat or did you chop off the entire chamber before you started?
Running a reamer into a firecracked throat will dull the leade of the reamer, which is the most important part and also receives the most use.

It would have been interesting to send the reamer back unused and see what they say .
