CHAMBER REAMERS

Hugh Henriksen...Makes some of the best reamers around !!! You won't be disappointed at all !! Like all great things...it takes some time.

Hugh does make great reamers, but JGS is making them to the same level I'd say. They have been nailing every reamer I order right on the money.

Use a smitty who single-point cuts chambers, which takes the reamer out of the equation all together.
Myself, I foresee in the near future (next 10-years or so) that reamers will be on the out and "old school", and CNC single-point cut chambers as the future.

Sort to speak, want to try a 1/2-degree change in leade angle, or 0.010" change in free-bore, just adjust the program of the CNC in a matter of seconds. No getting a new reamer ground, waiting for it to come, and then being at the mercy of the finished grind.

Dave Manson Reamers. Dave will get on the phone with you and answer all your questions. The customer service is by far the greatest.

DM, my .02: I like it! BUT I believe the operator would still be at the mercy of an unforgivable setup. Now, if the CNC had a CMM index to orient the bore and determine the offsets, one could just chuck up the barrel and have at it. That would be the setup. :D

One of the setups I've seen is with a Haas T1 using a 6-jaw chuck, in front of True Bore Alignment System. On the carriage, a drill bit, a roughing boring-bar, and the finishing boring bar. Like 10-minutes start to finish from dialing, indexing, to chambered !.!.!
The best surface finish chambers I've ever seen (particularly the throats).

I don't think reamers will be a thing of the past. Big CNC machines are much more expensive that most smiths can afford. I realize that having a large inventory of reamers isn't cheap either.

Donovan, I like that too! I'm curious as to feed rate on the chamber finish cut. Are there any videos of that floating around on the web? Love to see it in action.

^^^
Aaron has a good point about small shops but here's a scenario to consider. Smith using a reamer, & time consuming setup vs. the same smith subbing the job out to an experienced CNC shop for half the price. (It might be LESS than 10 years.)

JGS

There are advantages and disadvantages over reamers vs cnc. That little carbide boring bar is about $400, I have open access to cnc lathes. I still use reamers, I have done a few with boring bars and it does work well. If I had to do it for a living I would be looking at the CNC route to have the variety of chambers and no reamer wear.

Have you had one done like that yet on one of your dashers?

I finalized an $800 custom order with jgs this morning- no issues on 3 custom designs. Then called ptg to order some reamers and other random stuff. I had to walk the girl thru the site to find each item since there wasnt a part number or anything. So after 20mins i just finalized my order at 2 items.

I would also recommend JGS or Manson. I have reamers from them both and they are exactly what I ordered. The last reamer I ordered from JGS was delivered in about 5 weeks. A couple years ago it was more like 5 months. Still the same quality to.

I will never order another reamer from the other large grinder out west. I gave up.

OH, not Hendrickson either, he makes the absolute best, but you might have the wait a year to get one from him.

JGS for me.

I believe Nathan Dagley of Straight Shot Gunsmithing was chambering with boring bars if memory serves me correctly. Whoever it was had some real nice solid carbide bars made up. Would be nice to see some video posted up of some of that action.
