Chamber reamer recommendations please

Thank you for the information. Further proof - if any is needed - of why 'legal opinions' posted on internet forums should be regarded with a good deal of suspicion. As my own country and the USA are officially allies, I won't worry any further about this matter.

I have over 200 reamers made by almost every reamer maker I the business. I have had great reamers and really bad reamers. I could have reamers made by any of the reamer makers. I choose Dave Kiff and Pacific Tool and Gauge for a number of reasons. First, over the years I have developed a great business relationship with Dave Kiff and feel like he tries to please every customer. Dave services the shooting industry from the largest manufactures to the individual shooter. With the exception to one former employee, Dave has great folks working for him. Kathleen is as good as it gets. She has a great knowledge of the products and services.(God Bless her) I don't know how she does it sometimes. The other ladies work just as hard as Kathleen and don't get much credit for doing an outstanding job. Dave's business has grown from a small shop to a very large shop. He has to oversee many employees and a lot of machines now. In cases where there have been mistakes made in reamer specs the majority of the time it is the customers fault and Dave and PT&G have made it right at PT&G's expense. Personalities are like "rear ends", everyone has one, if you don't like Dave Kiff or PT&G then try one of the other reamer makers. I don't know of anyone else in the business who gives you as the customer more for your dollar than Dave Kiff and PT&G.

Well said Nat, Dave Kiff and his company are at the top as far as i am concerned. He will bend over backwards and give you the shirt off his back to ensure your happiness with his product. The 3 gunsmiths I deal with all use Mr. Kiff's reamers and the results speak for them selves on the paper targets. Dave did run into a backlog last year and reamers were taking longer than the usual 8 weeks but all is good in my book. Good things take time and it also speaks for itself if Mr. Kiff has a backlog means his work and product are outstanding and the shooting world is turning to him more and more.

When I was building my 6MM BR I called PTG and spoke with the young lady that answered the phone. She was very knowledgeable but I still had a few questions and she transfered me to Dave. He answered the rest of my questions, made some suggestions and just happened to have the reamer I was looking for on the shelf. They shipped it out that day and I got it a few days later. I'm very happy with the way I was treated, the quality of their product and the price I was charged. I'll do all my business with them and recommend them to everyone I know.

For THEFITTER the diff. is 0.0018!!!

sorry just had to

Also great job Dave Kiff I have had the pleasur of talking to you and enjoyed .

Over the years, I have done several projects with custom reamers from PTG. In every case the experience was a good one, and the chambers were as ordered. Once when there was a misunderstanding about what a friend had written wanted in the way of a reamer modification, a new reamer was furnished (for no charge), in a timely manner. I will continue to call Dave any time that I need reamer work. You might also be interested in the large number of other gun and gunsmithing products that they make. A little time on their web site can be an illuminating experience. Unlike a lot of sites, his has new products on a regular basis. If they made action bodies, triggers and stocks, they could sell their own rifles, since they already make bottom metal, bolts, and rings, along with a myriad of other products that is somewhat amazing in its scope.

Thank you all for your support. I have had call after call this morning from folks that I have not talked to for years that have read this post and decided it was time to start a new project. Heck our competitor sent a guy over to us for a custom reamer. He said they are 18 weeks out and did not want to grind a custom reamer for him. I will always do the best we can for all of you that you can count on. Well back to the phones I just needed to thank you all for your work. Also I talked with a fellow you all know and he said Jerry Siminson was not feeling well and was having kind of a rough time . So please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you all Dave

Hmmmm, just for you negative guys......

#1-Have any of you ever run a company and if so is your 'customer satisfaction' 100%, 100% of the time? If you answer yes than I have no need to really believe any of your other answers, and yes I have been on both sides of the counter in several situations. Many times alot of difference in what was said/did and what REALLY what was said/did!!!!

#2-Kathleen and Megun are the only 2 ladies I have talked with over a dozen or so calls to PTG so can't speak for the rest but have absolutely no issues with how they have treated me and end results! My guess is them ladies have to try and read between the lines on many occassions because I will bet everything I have that most customers, including me but excluding 'real smiths' may think they know what they want but don't explain it right or really just don't have a clue. However, those gents would never admit it even with a 44mag held to the side of their head because of ego, and besides, 'what does a woman know'??? I think I can safely say that Dave wouldn't have them answering the phone and questions if he knew they were completely incompetent and running off customers. Heh, it's a 'guy' thing, we 'think' we know everthing!

#3-How many of you really really understand everything you ask/talk about concerning reamers? Do you know why something can or cannot be done, benefit or not from experience or because you "read it on the internet"? The internet I have found has increased the IQ of the US by 4 to five times, this I read on the net of course :) I am a newbie I guess and only cut a couple dozen chambers for myself and close friend and still sometimes can't grasp the 'freebore' measurements despite Dave explaining it to me in detail! But I can admit that, many can't!

#4-Over the years I cannot count how many times I have read "call Dave, he'll tell you what you need to know"!! I for the life of me cannot figure out how Dave gets done what he does with all the phone calls, many I am sure of which will never put a dime in his pocket. To those of you who seem to think making condecending remarks to Dave and referring to his 'past employer' I am guessing are the type that enjoy non face to face cheap shots etc! Pretty common nowdays with the net, easy to be rude, obnoxious and inconsiderate, in many times for ego purposes only. Sad really. If you are happier buying from JGS I am sure that probably makes Dave Kiff happy also, least that is one less whinner to deal with on a regular basis! Kinda easy to belittle someone on the net, guess that is your 'payback' for not getting it your way previously?

Well, that is my worthless .02cents worth, bash me if you wish but I will continue to receive inferior products from an inconsiderate and incompetent company in an untimely manner and still be happy with what I get and enjoy the great phone conversations Dave and I have had in the past! :) Have a good day everyone and perhaps try and wear the shoes of those you always disagree with on occassion.

Respectfully,
Dennis

Interesting... 3 pages, 2 recommendations, one for PT&G and one for JGS and a whole lot of DRAMA!?

Not sure how this turned into a PT&G party, I'm pretty sure I never mentioned them.

Never knew reamers were such a hot topic.

One final question- since you all only mentioned PT&G and JGS...which one should I go with? ;D

Figure out which company you feel will provide you the best in terms of true cutting tool quality and go there.

It's not a decision involving an emotional response or a popularity contest - you're looking to cut a rifle chamber well and true - it's that simple!

Good luck!

Robert

I have only bought reamers from Dave and from Henriksen. Both are excellent in quality, but Dave is faster in delivery time. Good shooting...James

I chose to buy my first reamer from PT&G a while back based on the recommendation of a fellow shooter I trust. I've bought several more since. I'm sure the other reamer makers make a great product as well, but I'll probably continue to buy my reamers from Dave unless I'm given a reason not to.

As the Forum Boss mentioned, they all make good products and probably lots of internet citizens have had issues with one or the others at any given time- nobody gets it right 100% of the time. Ideally, when it's not right, it gets made right. If not, you take your business somewhere else- the beauty of freedom of choice.

If you don't have any direct experience with any of them, pick one based on the advice of someone you trust and get to gettin'.

Now there is a good explanation if I ever heard one, and my reason for bailing.

One of the reasons I come in to this place every day and try and do my best is because I am blessed with customers like you folks. Yes we all have our different ideas about what makes a rifle shoot but most of you let me grind a reamer the way I think it should be made with your help and most of the time the outcome is perfect. As a matter of fact 17 out of the last 21 different state and world records broken over the years since I left JGS and started my own shop have been broken with my reamers, from Canada to New Zealand and here in the USA and Europe this rings true. I cant please all the people and frankly There are a few I try and push to JGS . I think they need to have the same experience that I did with that customer. Getting the rude and strange ones out lets me get stuff done for the wise. Again I feel blessed every time I pick up the phone and work on a reamer with you all. I will get behind on deliveries and make a few mistakes in our quest for perfection but the proof is in the end results and the end results are 100% guaranteed. Thank you all for your work and support, you make me proud to be a American small business owner. THANK YOU Dave.

Very well put Dave, thank you for all the excellent reams you have made for me and or I have acquired.

40XGuy,
Frank,.....now you know why I haven't been on here, I would have been smack dab in the middle of it all. Thanks for the heads up on the thread and I am really glad your new rest is working good for you,...later my friend ;)
Wayne.
