Chamber reamer recommendations please

Need a Chamber reamer made. Who is the best that actually listens to the customer and pays attention to what they want. Need one that knows the difference between .002 and .0002 >:(

Thanks

I now use JGS and my contact has been Sarah Siewell. I purchased a lathe and bought other tooling needed from them and all has been top notch.

Are you saying I should not even attempt to discuss finite details with the individuals that answer the phone and e-mails because they might not know the difference between .002 and .0002?

Dave Kiff and PTG have been doing this work for a lot of years. They have built probably 80% or 90% percent of the reamers for match rifles all over this country and sevreal more countrys as well. They do not need you to tell them or ask them if "THEY" know the basic fundamentals of machining.

That is just my opinion, it is after all the only one I am qualified to speak to.

And, if you "need" to ask if they know the difference, don't bother them with your order or any questions period! Seems to me you wouldn't have enough faith in them no matter what they did for you or had to say.
The folks at PT&G know their business. IMHO, it would be an insult to them and a real bad way for you to start off with any dealings with just about anybody. Think real hard before you make your first contact with anybody.

One of the reasons I come in to this place every day and try and do my best is because I am blessed with customers like you folks. Yes we all have our different ideas about what makes a rifle shoot but most of you let me grind a reamer the way I think it should be made with your help and most of the time the outcome is perfect. As a matter of fact 17 out of the last 21 different state and world records broken over the years since I left JGS and started my own shop have been broken with my reamers, from Canada to New Zealand and here in the USA and Europe this rings true. I cant please all the people and frankly There are a few I try and push to JGS . I think they need to have the same experience that I did with that customer. Getting the rude and strange ones out lets me get stuff done for the wise. Again I feel blessed every time I pick up the phone and work on a reamer with you all. I will get behind on deliveries and make a few mistakes in our quest for perfection but the proof is in the end results and the end results are 100% guaranteed. Thank you all for your work and support, you make me proud to be a American small business owner. THANK YOU Dave.

Dear Mr Kiff

I wish that I could agree with your claims about the excellence of your company, and with the adulation that other posters here heap on you, but unfortunately I cannot do any such thing.

Over recent weeks I have sent your company both emails and messages through your web site requesting a few simple pieces of information about your chambering reamers, and I have received absolutely NOTHING in the way of a reply. A friend of mine has also been trying repeatedly to obtain information from you about getting a ‘special’ reamer made, a standard reamer modified to the extent that it is essentially a wildcat. He too has received NO reply. He tells me that he tried to telephone you personally one time recently, but was told that you were not available.

The gunsmith who will be doing the barrel chambering and fitting for me (when I get the appropriate reamer!) tells me he is about ready to give up dealing with your company because he has had such unreliable service in recent times, and named other suppliers with whom he has been completely satisfied.

We contacted one of these suppliers, and in less than a week received specifications of what they could supply, a firm price and a delivery time. Good service, about what one could reasonably expect from a properly organized business. Much better than being repeatedly ignored for weeks on end, and reading on internet forums that one needs to speak personally to the managing director – if he is available – to get any attention.

May I respectfully suggest that there are some problems at the front desk of your company whch need to be addressed.

My email is dave@kifftool.com and my phone number is 541-826-5808 also my cell is 541-660-5724. You can try these or ask your question here I will talk with you any time. We have a web site that has a listing for the reamers, gauges and many other parts you can type www.pacifictoolandgauge.com and view some of the machine parts and cutting tools we offer. We have the price for the parts on the site. Kathleen gets 200 to 2000 emails per day so it takes a while for her to get back to you. I am here 12 hours a day and have 9 sales people taking a call every 33 seconds. I stay here every day until I call my customers back or leave a message to tell them I have called. The price is simple I dont have a mark up on customs or wildcats as that is a rip off . It does not take me or my crew any longer to grind a custom reamer than it does a standard . The price for a rim less reamer with removable pilot is 66 to 138 bucks and belted reamers are at 147 bucks . Thousands of reamers are made and sold at these prices thats why we are so hard to get in touch with at times. Call if you can on my cell phone I will have it on till 9 PST. Thanks Dave,

Dave that reamer is in the inspection dept. should ship friday .Here we run reamers in a group with all the same body tapers close together . I run about 100 HSS reamer blanks out of the machine shop at a time per batch and then the rest wait to go with the next 100 or so . Your reamer had to be ran in the batch we are just finishing. I ran out of blanks the day your card was in the slot. So you got stuck in the next group .I have close to 100 BR reamers and about 200 PPC reamers in inspection now . If you ever get a chance to stop in on your way up I-5 you could see how we run the reamers through. Gary O'cock stopped by last week on the way to a match and was shocked to see all the tooling going through the shop . My trouble is not getting it through the front desk its getting it through the grind shop . I am starting to get back to a faster delivery. Most of the time we are 2-8weeks with more going out in two weeks than 6 to 8. I will have Megun call you in the morn to let you know its on the way. I am glad that my new grinders came in . I think they will cut my delivery time in half, they are cnc grinders. well off to the house to eat. Thanks Dave

Unfortunately in this business, (any custom work or parts for fine firearms) the industry is in fact quite small. Most shops were started by one man with a vision and as things grew so did the employees, phone calls and e-mails. It is a fact of life that in this industry margins are slight and money can't be wasted. Although some may disagree with that, but they are the same guys who look for the cheapest "work shed smith" to chamber their barrels. This isn't the insurance industry or health care where there is a multitude of people to answer most general questions, 24 hours a day. This industry and the process of bringing a custom rifle to fruition is a complex matter of suppliers and craftsman who operate on very certain and different time-lines.

Most everyone with-in the industry, has a working relationship with everyone else in the industry, we understand delays and mistakes, and production supply issues even at the level of raw material deliveries. We work together and resolve our issues out of the public eye in 99.9% of the cases.

To the OP, in most cases it is best to bring your vision, to a career gunsmith, and let him do the footwork as far as reamer specs, component compatibility issues, and choices. They have the working relationship with the industry and understand how each supplier operates and can usually get results faster and with less headaches for everyone. If your gunsmith recommended a reamer maker it would have been best to heed his advice, and worked with your smith on reamer specs and allowed him to order it for you. This would have saved you a headache, and Dave Kiff the incessant harassment on an open forum, for no other reason then an e-mail or phone call not being returned. My only suggestion for you is to be patient understand we are all human and all trying to serve our customers the best we can, one off projects take alot of time and coordination to get them right the first time, if your this frustrated this early in the process your in for a long rough road.

I have worked as a customer of Dave's' for about 5 years, has things been 100% perfect? No. Do I really expect them to be? NO. Have I waited longer for some things at different times of the year? You bet.
But anytime I had a problem or issue , Dave has addressed the issue and stood behind his product 100%. That is where he shines unrelenting customer service.
In all honesty he supplies excellent products at fair prices in reasonable amounts of time. He is truly an asset to this industry, supplying a wide variety of aftermarket parts that would be difficult to source with-out him. His respectful response to your post is exactly what I would expect from him.

To me the issue is always one of obtaining a top quality reamer with sharp clean cutting edges and proper primary and secondary clearances, one that is dimensionally 100% and within the tolerances listed on the print. When you consider what is spent for a good barrel blank, to have someone to fit it up to an action and chamber it, to go with anything less than the best is being "penny wise and pound foolish". These days I have been using JGS reamers and have been most pleased with them because they deliver what I am looking for.

Looks like he took the high road too.

Mr Kiff: Thank you for your response. It’s too late to telephone you, as it will now be very late at night in your part of the world, so I will send an email to the address you have provided. There is one question which I will put to you here, though, as the answer will probably be of interest to many others:

Are you able to export chambering reamers to other countries without having to go through the laborious and expensive rigmarole of obtaining an export license?

I ask this question because not long ago somebody the statement (it may have been on this forum, or maybe another, I cannot remember now) that some genius in your federal government has decreed that chambering reamers are ‘munitions-related’ items, and therefore can only be exported with the appropriate license. If this is in fact correct, then I’ll be looking for a reamer maker based in some country other than the USA. Any country!

We've used various reamers from JGS, PT&G, and Dave Manson on various projects. They all produce good products. Wait times can vary with seasonal demands with all of these reamer makers. PT&G has always delivered good turn-around for our projects.

I applaud Dave Kiff for providing direct and timely responses on this Forum. He's a very busy guy running a pretty big enterprise with lots of employees. I doubt if you'll find that the President of most gun-equipment companies would make the effort to respond to internet Forum questions, let alone within 30 minutes of their posting.

Reamers don't come any better than PTG. I have 14 of them....shortest wait was 4 days, longest was 4 or 5 weeks. Dave has always been great to deal with.

PTG can send reamers to any country if they wish to. PTG will not send tools or parts to any nation that may build a firearm that could be used to harm our troops or our allies .
