Chamber Reamer Question

I am considering ordering a chamber reamer for my next project. Should I order a reamer with a removable pilot or a fixed pilot? Is the fixed pilot reamer more likely to damage the rifling?

Moo,
Some swear by them and others swear at them. I think it's a personal choice for whatever the conditions are and sometimes the bore can be eccentric to the OD so the right choice has to be made. I always preferred the removable piloted type as I made all my own reamers and then could best make up a softer pilot to fit any occassion. Some even pilot it to a 1/2, 3/4 depth and then remove any piloting and let the reamer do its thing as long as it is started correctly to fit the circumstances and clean up for a concentric chamber. To ream a chamber is almost different for most people and they have their own way of doing things but the job gets done and is acceptable.
As long as the OD, the threading and the chamber are done on the same set up you should be in good shape. Only one person's view
PS If this is your first, take a depth mic from the front of a squared action to the bolt face in a locked position and work to that as a "K". This may help

I've used a few non piloted reamers with no problems, but any new reamer ordered will have a pilot on it....
