CHABOT SPECIAL at Sac Valley Sept. 2nd

Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters will be holding a "Chabot Special" Group/Score Benchrest match this Saturday Sept. 2nd at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, Range 11 (Bob Dorton Memorial Benchrest Range). This match is probably our most popular event of the year with a little something for everyone. We shoot for both group and score on the same target at 200 yds, kind of like what they do in LR BR.
Updated format reflecting the new targets is explained below:

CHABOT SPECIAL MATCH
This match will be shot on the caliber specific SBS 200 YD Chabot Special target which has 3 record bulls in the center with multiple sighter bulls on both sides.
Shooters using .22, 6mm, 6.5mm calibers will shoot the .243 target, those using 7mm & .308 calibers will shoot the .308 target. Examples of targets are attached.
We will shoot the match in 4-20 minute relays of 3 bulls each with a 5 shot group on each bull. We will take a short break after each relay to change/score the targets, clean (F-Class shooters ignore this part), potty breaks, whatever.
Total of 60 shots for record plus unlimited sighters. 100 rds should be plenty, fyi I normally go through @80-85.

You can shoot whatever weight/class gun you want, BR pistols are welcome, no weight limit, 30 caliber or less.
We would prefer no muzzle brakes but will try and be as accommodating as possible.
Please try and be considerate of your fellow shooters, after all these are Benchrest matches. Were not used to big boomers!

This is always a fun match, with the 30's duking it out with the 6's for bragging rights, and requiring a little strategy to do well in the overall total. Rumor has it that we may have a few F-Class shooters coming down the hill to join Lane in abusing the BR shooters. Try not to beat up on them to bad!;)

I will send out Bench Assignments Thursday evening for anyone Pre-registered (greatly appreciated by yours truly) and if you come to the Friday morning practice, you can set up and practice on your bench.
Gates open at 7:00, go directly to Range 11 check in and if not pre-registered you can draw your bench and get set up.
We will try and start as close to 8:00 as possible (8:15 more likely), get done early and get everyone on the road to beat the holiday traffic! Weather is supposed to be mild in the low 80's, with mild breezes. (Yeh right!)

Match fee is $30.00, please bring exact change
$20.00 goes to Club expenses/range fees, small group/high score awards, etc.
$10.00 goes to the cash awards, with payouts to the top 3 in score, top 3 in group, and top 4 in OA,
as determined by your place in the 2 categories, lowest total score wins.
Hope to see you there!

That’s why I use heavy stands, they don’t tip over even in Phoenix. (Course I did have a prop freeze down there one year)!
And don’t try and kid us, we all know you sneak a peak at our flags on a regular basis.
Played with the new target today, got the paper right so we should be good to go.
The way that 7 Fat Dawg shoots, if it really blows I may shoot it.
Naw the 30BR would get jealous.
See ya Saturday

FYI,
attached pics of final version of the new Chabot Target.
Paper choice works well, leaves nice round holes, easy to measure.
Was playing with the target while testing the old tune with a new lot of powder in the 7 FatDawg (Shehane).
Still shoots, looks like the old tune window is still valid with the new lot.
Hope to see everyone Saturday,
PS: If you pre-register with Dan let him know what caliber you are shooting so I can keep track of how many targets to make up.

Yeah, heard some grumbling about that last time. Something about a rule so one may only look at ones own wind flags. And something about putting me on the predicted upwind side of the range. Those BR guys are always scheming to gain an advantage. .30BR (cough, cough)

Had a fleeting thought about cleaning the PPC, but it only has 100+- rounds on it since the last cleaning. Fortunately, that thought quickly passed. Besides, the barrel likely has 2500+ rounds on it, so why bother at this point?????

So the phrase “ if you’re not cleaning, you’re not winning” is overrated? I could do without bringing all that stuff.

Can you give us F guys a clarification on sighters? Sighters are unlimited and can you go back and forth between record shots and sighters or after you go for record on each bull no more sighters? Also what time do you want us there?

Sighters are unlimited on every card, total of (4)
3-bull cards, 12 bulls/60 shots for record.
You can take as many or as few sighters as you want during the allotted 20 min (per 3-bull card) firing period, no order or restrictions. Makes checking a change in conditions easier, but sometimes not always necessary, I feel my best sighter was my last shot (remember no time lag to spot target) unless there is a radical change in conditions. Not that those ever happen in the Ione Triangle
7:00 is the signup for those not pre-registered, if you are pre registered you will get an e-mail Thursday evening with your bench assignment. Safety brief, questions, instructions @ 7:30, hope to start at 8:00. (Which never happens)
Any other questions let me know,

To all the shooters,
Steve & I are planning on getting there @ 7:00 tomorrow morning and setting the frames up before practice.
Bench Assignments have been e-mailed to everyone who pre-registered.
If you are coming Friday for practice, sign in and pay at the Range office, then come up to Range 11.
Practice is at 200 yards, please setup and shoot off your assigned bench, using your assigned target frame. If you haven't registered yet and show up for practice you will be assigned a bench in the morning.
I don’t know how many we have coming for practice, but there are a few.
We have the range all day so as long as there are two or more shooters on the range,
you can practice to your hearts content.
Personally I plan on being out of there early and try and beat all the idiots home.

Saturday morning:
Go directly to Range 11, do not check in at the Main Office.
Signup/setup at & 7:00
Orientation/Safety brief: 7:30
Match starts at 8:00 (or as close as possible).

Match Director Dan will not be attending & I am going to be pulling double duty so patience is appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
G

Yep, we've been discussing that. We are going to call it the "Lane" rule.
As in "Stay in your own lane”
Lane :)
See ya in the morning

It’s funny that when I started in SR BR 25 years ago or so I cleaned after every card. That what you did. Then I slowly realized I could shoot 3 card’s between cleaning, then an Agg!
Of course as soon as I shot a bad group I blamed it on a dirty gun because I NEVER miss a condition. I quit cleaning the 30BR until I am done for the day, after putting 5 leftover rds into a .134 group at 200 yds with 39 rds through it at that point. Lane may win me over yet
G

Breezy morning for practice in the Ione Triangle, with winds mostly out of the SW 5-15 MPH.
No Lane, my "twirly wind-o-magic thingys" didn't tip over but I did have 1 tail try to head up to Range 12!
I took my first sighter with no windage correction to check, and was 3 1/2" right of POA. threw 2 minutes on and shot 25 practice rounds on the new target we will be using tomorrow. Picture attached for your viewing pleasure. Strongest condition was on Bull 2, I started holding just on the LH side of the 10 ring in the L-R push, and took my last shot holding at 10:00 between the 8-9 ring. I kept holding over and they kept going in the same place!
Wind is supposed to be much calmer tomorrow (Sorry Lane), and it looks like we will get lucky and be done before the rain comes in.
We got the bases all laid out, and will set the frames up first thing so everyone can get set up and hopefully we can start as close to 8:00 as possible.
See ya'll in the AM.
G

Good morning all,
We had a great day yesterday at Sac Valley shooting the 3rd Chabot Special of the year, first one with the revised targets and format. We had a front coming through which although dropping a little drizzle now and then really kept the wind conditions incredibly mild compared to what we are used to here in the Ione Triangle. It really wasn't much of a contest with famous (infamous?) sling shooter Lane Buxton dominating both Group & Score and winning the match in convincing fashion. Lane only had one group in the .7's, with just a bunch of constant 4's,5's, & 6's. He also averaged 52+ on the score portion! This is 200 yds remember, a truly awesome performance. OK enough sucking up to my LR wind coach, on to the other shooters.
Francis Lee parlayed a 2nd in Score & 3rd in group for a nice 2nd Place in the OA Agg & I managed to somehow scrape together a 3rd in the OA, even after throwing an 1.25" group down on the 1st bull.
Whine, Whine, Whine.
We had a few F-Open guys join us, including Bruce who shot the match (quite well) prone (?!), and they all seemed to enjoy being able to see there bullet holes. Shawn was happy he got to actually use the 55x end of his scope for a change! Special mention to a couple of new (to us) shooters, Erik Naka & Terry Pippin who came out to try our game. Terry shot his 22-250, and made the most relevant point I've heard in a while, paraphrasing here: "You can read about it all you want on the internet, but you won't really know what it's about unless you come out & shoot"
Let me repeat that part, its important....
COME OUT & SHOOT!!!!
Thanks for joining us guys, we look forward to seeing you again.
I personally want to thank all the shooters for pitching in and helping, including Bryn, Erik & the usual 2 Steve's for setting stuff up on Friday. Unfortunately Steve Raeder couldn't make the match, he was fighting a stomach bug. Get well soon we missed you and your .30.
Speaking of which we only had 3 30BR's at the match but they represented well taking 2,3,& 4th place in the overall agg.
Complete results & pics attached.

Really wanted to shoot that on Saturday, but old Murphy decided my truck needed to spend several days at the shop. With hunting season here and a couple out of state hunts planned for September and October, I dont know how much match shooting I can do at the end of the year.
