CG Inch Action

Robert Chombart emailed this to me today and I have decided to publish the article in its entirety as it covers some interesting points on the differences between modern rear locking rifle actions, specifically the M41 CG INCH action compared to the military rear locking action specifically the SMLE.

As ever, Roberts comments make for interesting reading.

Robert, many thanks for addressing the issue well beyond my satisfaction. How close of tolerance is the bolt fitted to the receiver? I think it would be phenomenal for the INCH to be manufactured here in the US. My first choice would be for Warner Tool Co. to manufacture the actions. Their established track record of high precision rifle work along with manufacturing the finest rear sight qualifies them as the premier competition rifle firm here in the US. Gary Elisio would be another fine choice for running with the INCH manufacture. Please let me know how I can assist in this endeavor as I would love to see th e INCH well received here in the states.

Kindest regards to you sir.

Scott,

Thank you,

I am not to revael all the manufacturing secrets..LOL,

Seriouslv, the clearance is 0,05mm maximum (ISO H8/e8),closer than it can be for a front locking system.

In addition, the two parts are full cylinders, with a 100% concentric bearing on full circumference and lenght, something that does not exist on most front lockers in which raceways considerably reduce the bearing area.

Also, the bolt is centered direct from front, where it completely encircle the case head. On front lockers, this centering only occur a minimum of 1'' behind the front, after the receiver lugs.

On US manufacturing, this would be the ideal solution and we would welcome any suggestion.

Sincerely yours
Robert

Robert, I have listed two potential manufacturing firms with well established pedigrees in long range shooting. I believe that those avenues are the best options. Current action manufacturers are already running at full capacity. In addition, the largest market share for the INCH action lies with position/long-range shooters as the design aspects of the INCH lend themselves especially to said shooters.

Sincerely.

I, for one, am definitely the type who likes to try something different, so I'd love to see the INCH action available in the US so I could give it a try. Scott listed two manufacturers that I would trust implicitly if they were manufacturing the action.

Jaychris,

Open to envisage any solution including marketing. The triggers are already made in USA.....

Best regards

RGC, you're a gent for allowing these peanut gallery members to offer advice on how to run your business. And for proposing that other companies -- with whom neither poster has the slightest influence -- get geared up to make a product with/for you.

As if these spectators merely have to toss out ideas, and somehow you and Warner Tool Company and Competition Machine, Inc. will realize "Damn, why didn't we think of that? Those keyboard consultants are geniuses!"

Maybe, with a bit of introspection, the peanut gallery will actually try to do something, rather than telling you what you should do. ::)

If you like, I could introduce you to a gentleman who has longtime connections in the aerospace manufacturing industry, who is looking to get into the rifle mfg. business himself, and with whom I've spoken about marketing ideas once he gets his products fabbed to his satisfaction. There may be an opportunity for you to collaborate, if only to understand the economies of scale. PM me if you're interested.

Speaking for a member of the "peanut gallery", I was simply suggesting that if the action were available in the US, I would buy it. And that if Robert chose to collaborate with either of the two manufacturer's suggested by Scott, I would think that a good choice, if that were the route he chose to go. To suggest that I was saying, implying, or otherwise indicating anything else with regards to Robert's business or what he should do with it (or that I had any ability to assist), is simply a foolish interpretation of my comment.

Bonjour Robert,
I would like to know what were your thoughts on the Remington 788 action design and the good and the bad points of that action? Do you think that mechanically it was (or could have been) superior to the Remington 700?
Merci par avance.

Bonjour, Nicolas, heureux de lire un peu de 'frogspik' ici

I keep the Rem 788 actio in great regard. I have one in my collection and it was one of those I studied when establishing the INCH details.

If you visit http://www.actionclear.com.au/products/cginch.php and click 'The birth of the INCH"; you will see what I wrote at the time about this action...

Bien cordialement
Robert

BOhio, you sir do not know me nor do you have any idea with whom my influence carries. This conversation between Robert and I has been ongoing for some time now both privately and in different forums. Mr. Chombart has the issue of getting his action manufactured in the US so that it is available here. Importing them has been ruled out by the sluggishness of our government's bureaucracy. If you care to link Robert up with your friend, good for you. Disparaging others for directing a fellow towards possibilities in a country in which he doesn't reside is in poor form and quite rude. Any further remarks of the kind will be subject to great scrutiny and may be grounds for a posting ban. Sincerely.

I thought this might be of interest. It is the CG INCH Action (M41) in the new M75 chassis system also designed by Robert. The bipod is one of mine.
