Center X Is Here!

What is your percentage of hits?
Depends on the wind of course. The old rifle has a Redfield 3200 12X with a fine crosshair. Percentage? Never thought about that but somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20% on a calm day. The guys shooting very high dollar rifle/scope/rest combos do somewhat better on the pills. That's to be expected.

No wallet targets. Don't hang them up either. Haven't played much with rf ammo, just wondering how best to even test other ammo(when it's hard to find).
Options are slim:
1) pay sharp attention to resellers who will sell lot samples (Killoughs, Good Shooting, Etc), buy a bunch of samples and test them *immediately* and order the best lot if it's still in stock a few days later.**
2) Buy ammo by the brick and/or case and hope the lots shoot well. Sell off the lots that don't perform for you or use it for practice.
3) try to get an appointment for tunnel testing with Eley or Lapua. With Lapua it's been difficult to get in for testing and you're currently limited to one case. Just three years ago you could get in within a few months and you would be permitted to buy multiple cases following the test.
4) expand your options. I've had a brick of Lapua Long Range match up well with a friends Vudoo (too bad we can't get more) and I bought a case of Norma Tac-22 at $3/box that shoots about as well as an average lot of match ammo at 1/5 the price.

** If you don't have a great outdoor location for testing or access to a 50y indoor range, the test results won't be as conclusive and buying will be more risky. Great ammo tends to shoot best in all conditions, but if you only have a box of each it's easier said than done. Also, consider ammo resellers who are geographically close to you since ammo only ships by ground. Killoughs doesn't work at all for me because by the time my samples arrive, someone else has received samples, tested, and ordered the ammo I might have been interested in.

David, do you sort inside a lot# of ammo you tested and decide to shoot for score? Wondering if I could sort (not sure how) and reduce "flyers"?

I do not sort. I’m just getting into this stuff (terrible timing eh?). I’ve heard about rim thickness sorting but never tried it.

Sorting by rim thickness might be just with mid tier ammo, but top grade, pretty much a waste of time, but if you sort by the face the rim to the ogive, then, you might see some results.. i feel that i have. Now on another note, there are plenty out there that will say that even sorting that way is a waste of time.. i feel that some of those that say that, sort their ammo and are trying to talk you out of it so that they feel that they have an edge over you..

I would need to compete for that scenario to play out, but yes.

As with all shooting disciplines, there are preparations that definitely improve performance (e.g. lot testing and selection) and preparations that may improve performance (e.g. various types of sorting).

Top competitors tend to do everything.

I think with rimfire there is also the possibility to just buy and test tons of lots and barrels and reserve the best combinations for the highest level comps. In other words, brute force the performance with money and testing.

It’s up to each of us to decide which ones matter for our use case. So it’s always useful to know whether a specific preparation lands in the definitely vs maybe helpful categories.

On a related a note, a guy at my club bought two cases of match ammo after tunnel testing. It shot great except there was a bad round (low POI) about one per brick. Perhaps sorting could have culled those, perhaps not. The effort required to cull and testing to satisfy that it was successful just didn’t work out.

I haven't bought any Center-X since the last time I sent a V-22 bbl'd action out to Mesa for testing early in 2019, and before that, I tested a dozen or more lots before finding something worth buying in case quantity. Actually, I've seen some exceptional lots of SK Std+ that shot better than a few of the worst lots of Center-X. So I'm not all that crazy about buying blind when random lots of Center-X show up in stock. OTOH, the last two cases of Std+ and one case of Rifle Match that I've gotten after putting my name on the list at a couple of SK ammo resalers have been pretty darned good at 50yds, and not bad at 100 - maybe improved QC & some newer or rebuilt loading machines have made a difference over the past four years? Still, I live out in the sticks, and if I got stuck with a batch of Center-X that didn't shoot up to my expectations, it wouldn't be that easy to peddle it out here. So I guess I'll go with my original plan to get an appointment at the Mesa Lapua test center and settle for a case of ammo that shoots exceptionally well out of one or both of my V22S single shots...
