CCI Primer Depth causing miss fires

I have had some firing issues recently with firing reliability using CCI 450 srp. The primer is not the problem.

I think my issue is with getting consistent prime seating depth. I'm using a RCBS Automatic Bench Priming tool.

Are there Priming tools that with one pull will give exact seating depth?

The Lee hand priming tools will give exact seating depth with one pull (squeeze). You just squeeze with your hand till you feel the primer bottom in the pocket. They can't be seated any more accurately than that.

Several have mentioned head space. I did not bump this virgin Lapua brass. I’m shooting this in a new Krueger barrel.

The new Lapua cases that I bought for my Grendel were .012 shorter than my chamber.
New case measurement with Hornady comparator was 1.208 to datum, fireformed was 1.220.
The primer pockets also seemed to be a bit deep. I did get a few failure to fires, but no issues after
fireforming and bumping shoulder .004.

Just something you might want to check.

Have you ever measured? Measure the primer height, pocket depth, and how much if any crush once seated? I used a rcbs hand primer forever. I recently got a primal rights CPS and Accuracy One measuring tool. I can tell you that I can’t seat them by hand consistently and I certainly can’t adjust for testing 2,4,6 thou below flush or know when I’m crushing by feel. If a guy cares about this kind of thing, I thought it was interesting. There’s a great thread on it on here. I’ve yet to test on paper.

If the brass is new, I had this problem once and it turned out the shoulder was not formed correctly and the cartridge would move forward and end up with a light strike.

You might want to check case length with a comparator. If the shoulder is bumped to much, the case goes into the chamber further which will decrease firing pin penetration. I had this problem with Lapua cases a few years ago.
