CCI Polymer Coated Bullets

Read the Daily Bulletin on this - interesting. Wonder if it will eliminate cold barrel first shot flyers in 22 RF rifles.

I had a beautiful CZ 22 RF that consistently threw the first shot wild, when I say wild I mean 2 to 3" from a 1" bull at 50 yards. After that first shot it was a great shooter as long as you didn't let the barrel set too long without firing.

Before you rim fire guys unload on me let me say I read everything I could trying to fix the problem. I tried everything suggested, no cleaning, cleaning, pre-treatment with graphite, cleaning the throat area before shooting, different ammo etc. Nothing worked, the first cold barrel shot would go wild. Of course I know that RF's bores need to be 'seasoned' with 10 to 20 rounds before they start to group consistently so I kind of knew that shooting from a clean barrel wouldn't work but I tried it anyway just to rule it out in solving my cold barrel flyer problem.

Since I'm a hunter I couldn't bear first shot cold barrel flyers so I sold the CZ. I couldn't ask MR. Squirrel to let me take a cold barrel shot before I shot him; it doesn't work too well in the field. Not one to give up easily I got a Savage, another fine looking rilfe with a great trigger and bull barrel. Same problem although not as severe. Sold that one too, see PS below.

Bottom line - I wonder if this new bullet technology will solve the problem of cold barrel flyers or will it be like the moly-coated bullet craze in center fire rifles - ruin the barrel.

OK rim fire guys - unload on me.

PS: Solved the problem by acquiring a 17HMR which shoots jacket bullets; no flyers. As long as you take head shots you're fine but I sure miss shooting the more economical 22 RF.

There was a solution - carry a small cushion or a piece of heavy carpet with you. Put it on the ground, put the muzzle on it & fire your shot.
