CCI 450s in a 223??

Anyone using these with Varget. Plan to shoot 75 or 80gr bullets in a 1-8 twist. No gun yet. Just found some different available primers and might buy em up while there available. Have CCI 450s now but not sure if they're too hot. What's working for you folks??

450s will do just fine. But.....if you want to split hairs, "they" say BR4's and Varget are the winning combination when using Varget

I have used the following combinations....
450s(a must) and N540
450s and RL15
BR4s and Varget
BR4s and RL15
Wolfs with RL15, Varget and N540.

HTHs.....Jon

which wolf primer ?
they make a :
small rifle
a small rifle mag
and a small rifle 223

Varget and CCI 450's or Wolf Small rifle mag shoot great in every .223 I own.

Works great with ball powders also. (xTerminator, w748, etc.) in the .204 Ruger

CCI 450's work best with spherical powders such as 2230 or 2200 in the 223, because these powders are difficult to ignite. They will work however, with most any load with some careful tuning. Varget has worked very well for me with both Fed 205m and BR-4 primers.

what's the difference between the 450's and the 41's?

Everything is the same except for the anvil height, the 41 has a shorter anvil that requires a harder blow to set off the primer.

Please note that both Remington and Winchester when running Lake City Army Ammunition Plant did not produce a "SPECIAL" primer for their military ammunition.

Remington ran Lake City from 1941 till 1985 and loaded the 7 1/2 primer in the 5.56 ammunition. Also in all my manuals for service rifle loads no CCI #41 or #34 primers are used or recommended.

Look at the flash photos of the primers tested below and you will understand why they call the Remington primers "mini-flamethrowers". Remington used these primers to light off the Winchester ball powder loaded in the 5.56 ammunition at Lake City. ;)
