CCI 450 or CCI BR 4

what is the major difference in performance between these two primers ? Are the BR 4 worth the extra money ? Using them for informal target shooting between 100 and 300 yds. Powders being used are CFE 223, H335, Varget and Reloader 15. 223 rem bolt gun.

Only your wallet will know the difference.

I shot SR ‘Russians’ for years in long range competition.

When those went absent I started using supply of BR4’s I’d laid in. Those were kinda old and a few FtF’s made me try some new, alongside new 450’s.

At 1,000 yds vertical’s the same, chronos show SD’s & velocities the same.

BR4’s might show an advantage on mid-range BR targets but the rest of us shouldn’t find them necessary.

After you find the load you want to use, just try it in place of the 450's and see if you get any improvement. A primer change CAN make a difference, but it may be so small as to no justify the extra $$ in your case.

In your question you state for "informal target shooting between 100 and 300yds."
I think you already answered your question. Their is not enough difference between the 2
for plinking that you would notice and say, hey the groups on this one are really small
compared to that one. Plus the price, even thought it's a 1000 count, why spend more if you don't have to.
They will print differently, so if the 450's don't shoot for you for some reason, then try the BR4's
I've tried both and the 450's will shoot .1's and .2's That's all I use.

IMOP no, not worth twice the price. I tried Fed 205M and found they worked better and cost a bunch less than BR-4.

IIRC, the BR-4 is a match version of the CCI-400.

Just a few days ago I tried BR-4's in place of my favorite 450's. I have a problem rifle that just doesn't perform as it should. To my a amazement the group did get smaller. Now mind you this was a small sample test. I will be doing it again. I have done this test with other rifles and saw no difference. One day the BR wins and the next the 450 wins. So we shall see.

Test both.
Different cartridges respond differently. (both group size and ES)
Different powder/bullet combinations in the same cartridge respond differently. (both group size and ES)
Recommend not thinking of them as better or worse, but different.

Why try saving a penny per shot on bullets that cost $0.30-0.55 each?

Only your rifle can tell you and it depends what the rifle is capable of and your expectations. My BR shot like ass with 450's mid 4's at best with BR4's it dropped into the 2's and better.
My 6.5x47 was the opposite, the only way to know is to try them not me or anyone else can tell you what they will do.

+1^^ Try both the BR4 and the 450's. Especially since you're naming CFE 223 and 335 as some of your powder candidates. JME. WD

Yes, try both in your rifle and load, then depending on which gives you the better accuracy, that is the one you should use, no matter the cost difference.

If you weigh them you will find more variability in the 450s than the BR4s. Anyway that has been my experience.

Just to share an experience “

When I tested those primers along with several others, I felt that 450 primer was a touch hotter than BR
giving my finished load vertical. I’m fact they stood straight up
E Gads!
I stayed with the Br -4

I also felt that a person could build a load around any of the main stream primers. Ya just gotta test a bit for each one.
FYI-
Remington 61/2 are not good in a 6 Br

Like I posted earlier, Today I shot 450's and BR 4's in a test. Again. The BR-4's were not so good today, shooting a .6 and a .4 group. The 450's produced .2 and .3 today. Just the opposite of the other day. Of course it's a .223 at 100 yards. Oh well.
