Case Trimming & Neck Turning

Looking for some suggestions on tools to take care of case trimming & neck turning on 6ppc cases. There are so many options out there I thought it would make sense to get some experienced opinions here. Yes, I have read lots of threads about the subject, sometimes a few direct answers placed here can really help, thanks in advance for your thoughts. I really want something that is good quality and excellent accuracy.

This is going to be a long thread. The options are seemingly endless.

I use the Sinclair tools for neck turning tools with a power adapter. I have two tools for the two calibers I shoot competitively so I don't have to switch everything out and readjust them every time. One mistake I made originally was mixing brands and quickly found that that is a no go. Expander mandrels and trimmer mandrels should be paired. Once set up and you get the hang of it, turning goes quickly. K&M, 21st century and the "Pumpkin" trimmer are also very good tools of this type.

Wilson trimmer to trim for length. It's a simple tool to adjust so all you need is the trimmer and the case holders for your caliber.

If I had an endless supply of cash I would buy a Giraud Power Trimmer.

PMA look them up . I consider them to be one of the best and easiest to adjust . I have three and love them . They do a great job . just my two cents😳

I have two Wilson trimmers (one with a cordless drill attachment) and they are great. I buy a K&M neck turner for each tight neck barrel and that way I get consistent thickness all the time, especially when turning a fresh batch of brass.

Try to keep case lengths very close to the same before turning. If not, you will get various length cuts into the neck-shoulder junction.

Case Trimming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lXo96H-h7k It indexes off the bottom of the case, important for the 6PPC.

Tony Boyer who also shoots the 6ppc on page 145 of his book mentions that he uses the Pumpkin by Don Nielsen and also recommends a carbide mandrel.

Also read carefully page 160 of Precision Shooting Reloading Guide "I have found that many of the most experienced benchrest shooters and reloaders do not understand the absolutely critical relationship between the size of the expander mandrel and the diameter of the mandrel on the neck turner.

A 6mm expander mandrel has to be between .0008" and.001" LARGER than the mandrel on the neck turner. The larger mandrel allows two things... first a little bit of spring back that new brass has. It also allows a little clearance between the cartridge case and the neck turner mandrel.... "

I use a Gracey neck shaver and a Giraud trimmer which is probably the most expensive way to go, but I am a precision tool junkie.

+1...
Key is as was stated above for the shoulder junction. If the cases vary by as much as .002, it will show up in the shoulder as too deep. Been there... You do NOT want a "ridge" cut into your shoulder. Personally. I do have a Pumpkin, but have never enjoyed the angle Mr. Nielsen has put on it. I prefer a longer more gradual angle which makes you less "apt" to leave a ridge into the shoulder.
PMA and a few others have addressed this. PMA makes some fine equipment, as does K&M. I talk to these people at the "Super Shoot " coming up this month in Ohio. FWIW, anyone who IS anyone is there selling their products. You are then able to examine them, talk to them, or whatever else pleases you. Sinclair used to be there as well but no longer. I sit across the aisl from Mr. Don Nielsen each year in the loading barn, as I sell my products as well.
Actually, the only vender with a full supply of most of what you might need that still attends the SS is Bruno.
There was a time when there were several that hauled their stuff there, including Hart, Kinneman, Sinclair. It is a lot of work packing, setting up a display, and packing it all up again for the trip home.
I know most of these people and their products...

Gergg:

If you have not done so yet, you may want to consider pulling up www. benchrest.com
You will be addressing all PPC shooters with a few .30BR shooters as well. Their information on equipment is positive. There are no less than 30 HOF shooters in the PPC game that we all shoot with at the famous Super Shoot, Including Mr. TB, and another who has equally wrote a book on the subject.
Both of these men make the World Championships every year that take place in another country.

I sure would love to go to the SS, but don't think it is in the cards for this year. I have checked out the BR forum as well, might be a good idea to post over there too.

What makes the PMA neck turning tool better than the others? I ask as they all look so similar and the marketing says each is the best.

Yeah, they all say they are the best, however, last year I went over to their tent and spoke with them. I also have been doing this BR shooting long enough to know what to look for in a tool. After all, 17 yrs. qualifies one to do that, especially....looking at all your buddies equipment and exchanging notes on things. That's the best and most informative part....exchanging info about equipment. Ain't no better way to learn. It's like an apprentice being guided by a long time journeyman. All these people 22,000 ? giving you their ideas can be most confusing, and most of them do not shoot serious competition with money, trophies , and HALL OF FAME points involved.
That's the differance my friend.

If there is one great piece of advice, it would be this. Buy your own reamer and have the SAME MAN do your chambering each time you switch barrels. There is more to that, which you will find out as you go along.
About PMA....they do their homework on a product BEFORE marketing it, and I found that it would be near impossible to look at what they put out, and improve upon it.

For turning, I use the best of both worlds - K&M mandrel in my PMA Type A. The PMA has better ergonomics IMO and is easier to adjust, also IMO. For trimming, I use the Lyman but am considering either a WFT or an EZTrim for better convenience.

All of the opinions are appreciated.........I ended getting K&M neck turning stuff and the Wilson case trimmer, both seem to be quality tools.
