Case trimmer help.

I recently bought the RCBS case trimmer, electric) and it's total junk.
The shell holder design is the worst of any I've seen.
I've found that the case mouth can be cut as much as .06 out of square.

What do you recommend for cutting the cases to length?

Thanks in advance,

Rich

I'm considering the Wilson... how do you insert the shells?
Do you have to unbolt or unscrew a fitting inbetween each shell?

Rich, you buy a separate case holder for the particular case your trimming. Some case holders work for several different cases some don't. Some of the cases need a separate holder for fired cases, and unfired cases.

As far as the hold down in the middle you just tighten it slightly and then swivel it out of the way when you want to insert or remove the holder.

HA!!!

Me too - after spending months fooling with it, I finely threw mine in the trash, literally).

I use Foresters,I have four of them) and they have a power adapter that uses a hand drill, battery or AC) if you do lots of cases.

I will have to vote for the wilson trimmer as well. The trimmer is made by wilson but the stand it sets on and a micrometer attachment are made by sinclair. Great trimmer

The real pisser is the $230 for that RCBS trimmer could have been spent else where.
I ordered the Wilson trimmer.

Thanks for the info guys,

Rich

I have a wilson and a forster and like them both. the wilson is a little slower but is probably more accurate. i use the wilson clamped in a vise and hold the case holder by hand.____treeman

I have the Wilson with the Sinclair kit... stand, hold-down clamp, Starrett micrometer. Very nice, about as precise as you're going to get. Never ran mine w/ power to it, seemed kind of awkward for this set up.

For full-speed-ahead trim/chamfer/debur in one whack, the Giraud trimmer is awfully hard to beat - but they are spendy.

If you want powered trimming... you might try a Possum Hollow trimmer, from Sinclair) that chucks in a drill press. Fairly inexpensive, other than the drill press, but I think a Chiwanese 1/3hp benchtop unit would work fine for this and its not like you won't be able to find other uses for the press) and works.

I still trim my cases manually.I use a Lyman Accutrimmer and have good results. it is inexpensive and works fine.It also uses standard shellholders.

Someone with a few machinist tools could turn the electric RCBS electric trimmer into a nice electric neck turner.

If you machined the shell holder area out to fit pumpkin turner, it would work great.

Unfortunately i don't have a lathe or mill.

You might want to look at FORSTER PRECISION PRODUCTS. I
have been using a couple of their case trimmers for the last
25 years. Like other trimmers, you can hand crank them of use
an adapter for a small rechargable hand held screw diver with
adjustable speeds. I'm using a BLACK & DECKER piviot-plusPD600.
It is a 6 volt. 180/600 RPM. The trimmer cuts to .001 or less.
It holds the case head in a collet like a full size lathe does.
