Case rim distortion and consequence?

The point though of my post was never to say there is only one possible cause of this distortion, my point is at least in my case, the cause was the shell holder under condition of hard sizing.

It was not, strictly speaking, under condition of hard sizing. The "sizing" happens when the case is entering the die. The marks you point out are from resistance to extracting the case from the die. It's hard for me to grasp how the case extraction could have been that difficult if the case was adequately lubed using an appropriate case lube (assuming the die's interior is in good shape.)

I suppose these marks (and deformation) could indicate the brass in the rim is very soft. Seems unlikely, but there it is.

I guess one can nitpick about this but I am not sure what the point is? Sizing as in the process of sizing and I think I made it pretty clear that it was on the up stroke as I said “I lube my case with Imperial, but even then sometimes it takes more effort when the slight case head expansion requires more effort to pull the die off the case”.

The cases were properly lubed with Imperial on finger which was “recharged” after every case and wiped from case head to neck all the way around the case. Most seasoned reloaders knows that this does happen sometimes as the case head is never annealed and as such even though it is sized, the significant spring back will still grab the die if the case had swollen more as it from being loaded hot which these undoubtedly had been since I had done load development with some of them which means some were loaded hotter than what I use now.

If I have trouble removing the case from the die when the ram is lowered I expect the rim to imprint on the shell holder. And then there are those cases I have seen the that had there rims removed and cheap shell holders come apart.

On the up stroke: There is no such thing in reloading as' load and no load. But if there was I would say the load on the case on the upstroke would be the on case head, that would be the part of the case that sits on the deck of the shell holder when the ram is raised and I would say when the direction of the ram was reversed the load would be on the top of the rim.

I have used Imperial, when the going gets tuff I have trouble making that stuff look good. I form cases by raising the case head off of the deck of the shell holder with feeler gage. The case rim was not designed to forgive the reloader for abuse; if the case is shoved into the die with difficulty the reloader should expect the case to be difficult to remove from the die.

This clears everything up.......well said Mr. Guffey!......There really should be a forum within this forum called "just ask the guffer". We could save so much bandwidth not having these silly discussions about gun stuff we could just ask you ;)

I use a case friendly hammer. I have shell holders that fit like my old hand-me down shirts, my hand-me down shirts only fit where they touch. And then I have shell holders that fit by design. My tight fitting shell holders will indicate a case head that has been hammered with a heavy load, same for all those cases that are said to have soft case heads. I do not use the good fitting shell holders but I have them JIC, and remember, a Wilson case gage can be used on a fired and sized case.
