Case Neck Turning

OK, I am thinking about going over to the Dark Side...which is to say I am thinking about turning case necks. Quick question-does one take a FIRED case and run it through the Expander Mandrel, or does one first re-size the fired case, and then run it through the Expander Mandrel? If it is the latter, when using bushing dies...how does one determine which bushing?

This is for a 6BR, "no turn .272" reamer was used to cut the chamber. I simply want to uniform the cases by taking off the "high spots" on the case neck.

Thanks.

If your reamer has a .272 neck i don't think i would be turning anything off with Blue box Lapua, .012 neck thickness puts you in the area of a loaded round dia. .267-.268 that is .004+ clearance...... jim

Check out the article by German Salazar,(neck tuning basics). Just go up to articles & do a search on neck turning. his article is listed there along with others.

???

I have always ran my brass through my die I am going to use, then shaved the necks just to "true" them up.

Maybe only taking .0005 (or 1/2 thousandths) off. This will leave a few dull spots in the necks (low spots). The rest of the neck is shiney!

This is part of my brass prep.

I have to agree with the above statement! I want all of my cases "uniform"! Just set/adjust your neck turner up to achieve this! For the record, I use a FL neck bushing die. One pass through the die, then I uniform the neck as stated above!

Just my process! 1/2 thousanths shouldn't be that critical, but please give your opinion!

One of German's articles:

Also, this is what German recommends:

Before we go any further, size your brass with a full-length non-bushing die and trim to uniform length. Both these tasks are VERY important.

If the brass is new, run it over the expander and trim to uniform length.

From this point forward, I will take my new brass and follow his advice as per the above! I use a Sinclair expander die and mandrel!
